@Waveney i thought english amd french came from latin and german was gealic?
Waveney · 41-45, M
@GuyWithOpinions No. English is a Germanic language. Its closest relative is Dutch (and a language called Friesian) and it's in the same family as German, Dutch, and the Scandinavian languages except Finnish. French is derived from Latin, but modern English is also derived from norman French, or at least the vocabulary is (e.g., words ending in -ible, -able, -ation, ition, etc.).

Gaelic, you're thinking of Celtic, which includes Irish and Welsh. Indo-European, but not German or Latin-based.
