It depends in what context the teacher said it. Maybe the teacher was end of her tether. Maybe it was said in fun. You haven’t given us any context so how can we judge?

I'd think the little shit probably deserved it. You can tell my kids to shut up if it's warranted, just don't call them little shits, only I can do that.

Nothing. He probably gave her lip...they put up with way more than they have to, so I get it sometimes difficult for them.

I got told shut up many times...why
....because 5 times before they asked nicely and I kept jabbering....

@iamnikki hats off to teachers these days. Kids are unruly when together and even worse these days because they know teachers can't do anything.
Nah don't feel bad, you only human and lets face it, sometimes the only way kids listen is when someone loses it a bit.

@iamnikki One time in first grade our teacher said she was going to the office, the kids got loud. I was afraid we were going to get in trouble if she came down the hallway and heard us. I said SHUT UP. One girl started crying, she was a crybaby. The teacher walked into the classroom and said “Patricia, what are you crying about?” She said “Patti told me to shut up”. The teacher said “You should shut up, I heard you from down the hall”. At least we didn’t get chewed out that time. I thought I was going to get in trouble but didn’t.

@Fantabulous So right. I have seen so many sensible answers to the original post.
Talk to my child so I understand why she wasn't listening, make sure she got the hint, she knows everyone should take responsiblity for their actions.

@EarthlingWise wow this is such a mature way of approaching the matter.
@ArtieKat Sad, but true. No personal responsibility.

What kind of a teacher is that who doesn't know how to silence a child without the need to humiliate them?
I'm not having that kinda shit.

Give the teacher a bonus for maintaining control of their classroom.
No problem. If I can’t shut the little shits up, maybe she can and tell me how.
I would say they probably deserved it. sometimes they can talk too much.
Talking in class is a sign of disrespect. I wont tolerate that from my kids.
BittersweetPotato · 31-35, F
Depends on the situation.

But generally speaking, I won't be very pleased with a teacher using this strong language with kids. They should know better, and should be able to maintain their temper, and use appropriate language with kids. Even if the kid is at fault, they are the adult one, not the other way round, and they should know how to handle the situation without aggressive language. If the kid tomorrow learns to say shut up when someone doesn't listen to them, they better not learn it from the teacher!

Lol happened to me as a kid loads of times, don't see what the issue was.

I would tell the teacher if she expects respect in the classroom she needs to have that same respect for the children. and not to speak to my child like that again or the next time we have this conversation it will be at a board meeting
Abstractminded · 36-40, M
I would assume that happens every day 😄

Find out why and make an informed decision

Nothing. It's her workplace and her rules are all that matter. I got told to shut up countless times at school and for good reason. I barely spoke a word in class until I was 10, then when I found it was quite fun I made up for lost time 😊

Talk to their boss.
DCarey · 46-50, M
It would depend on the situation. I occasionally had to tell kids to listen and not talk, during the lesson, when unrelated conversations were going on.
Aye, I never do that. Thats a no no. They've lost control. And another teacher is never too old to be taught 🤷‍♀️

Depends. Some kids could do with being told to shut up from time to time.

But if they didn't deserve it, I would not be happy.
