If you are married, are you 'expected' to wear a wedding ring, or is there a law saying you have to, or some other reason?

Having never been married (or engaged to be married) I've never gone down that pathway of planning a wedding or buying symbols of commitment via marriage.

If a person is married, do they have to wear a wedding ring?

Is there any sort of law saying a married person has to wear a wedding ring?

Is there any sort of social convention that expects a married person to wear one?

If a married person chooses to not wear one, is that meant to be representation of something?

My wife and I both wore wedding rings. Mine was necessarily loose because of my work as a maintenance engineer in a food factory. I left it at home while on shift and put it on again at home. Sadly, it fell off somewhere after I retired and was lost. I am now widowed and wear my late wifes wedding ring on a chain around my neck every day.

There is no law, but western countries have strong social conventions which make it an expectation among many people. In Christian symbolism is represents unity and eternal love.

We didn't exchange rings at our wedding because my wife is a nurse and would have to take it off at work . . and then she would lose it in no time.

It is certainly a matter of choice, not a requirement. My wife and I wear ours. I don't suppose my ring has been off my finger other than when it was necessary for surgery or some other medical procedure. Fortunately, it still fits.

I am married. I expect my wife to wear her wedding ring. I on the other hand don't wear mine a lot. It is because of safety issues. I prefer to keep my fingers. Mechanics have a tendency to catch them on things and cause injury.
Been married 57+years.

I haven't worn mine in at least 30 years. I learned the hard way that it was not safe. Jumping down off a machine riser and using my hand to slide down, mine was caught on a screw that was protruding and I was basically hanging there by my ring finger, but luckily the tips of my toes were on the ground. By the time I got back to the shop and was able to use a side cutters to cut the mangled ring off, my finger was the size of a bratwurst. I healed up and the ring was repaired but it is now tucked away in my sock drawer.

We wear ours except on vacations, where we feel more vulnerable to robbery. And this: I love to dance; he's the opposite. I leave mine home so I'll be asked to dance. Only rarely does that cause misunderstanding.

My husband and I have wedding rings but we never wear them. I think it’s just a matter of choice.

i have a nickel sensitivity, so cannot wear old or stainless steel. Now there are other choices with rings, years ago that was not a choice, so never wore one.
No law, but custom and social expectation. Of course if you later gain weight and it no longer fits, then perhaps a bit more relaxed. Although they say it hots cheating while wearing a wedding ring, especially for women... 🙄
zonavar68 · 56-60, M
@VeronicaJane Wedding ring or not - it doesn't seem to stop the women from always wanting to cheat and 'date up' due to inate hypergamy (or desire for more money/fulfilment).
True for some @zonavar68, but not all. ;-)

It seems to be consided that a married women not wearing her wedding ring is opening the door to cheating. Probably the same applies to men.

Then again a married couple might just not like or want rings - after all they are frigging expensive!

Traditionally a wife wears a ring. When she removes it then that says a lot!
Monalisasmith86 · 41-45, F
@Maturebate what about the husband?
Maturebate · 70-79, M
@Monalisasmith86 I wear mine almost all the time, removing it for some jobs only.

I never really thought about it. I just did. No law, more social custom.
JimboSaturn · 56-60, M
No law but I think it's convention for most people.
smileylovesgaming · 31-35, F
