Why do some women constantly say the word "like"?

My girlfriend does it all the time, is there a reason women do that?
Don’t know but it’s very annoying. Beginning a sentence with “so” also grinds my gears.
@iamnikki Like, I’m not sure. 🤔
iamnikki · 31-35, F
@OlderSometimesWiser So, like find a like recipe or something 😅 🥘📖
@OlderSometimesWiser So, like, what I'm hearing is that you have a problem with vocal mannerisms other people have cultivated over the years.
Flenflyys · 31-35, F
I do all the time and like I think it’s because we are millennials

@Flenflyys You and her would get along. lol

@Flenflyys

Like stop it!
@Flenflyys Like has been used by so many people as a filler word over the years. Shaggy from Scooby-Doo has been doing it since 1969.

It's being used as fillers. That's what linguistics call it for ums, ers etc. It's the brain not spitting out information as fast as the mouth goes. It is also brain laziness (we all have it) where new words or just the correct words are not used or used enough to be reachable quickly. "Like" being used so often becomes muscle memory.
iamnikki · 31-35, F
I don't know. Like maybe it's so they can like add emphasis and like try to like get their point like...across better? 🤪

Same reason men constantly say “Ya know”
jackjjackson · 61-69, M
a lot of people add the same meaningless words to sentences all the time. Out of habit?

For example

I heard
You know
OK
So

What are some others you’ve encountered?

Women also use the word "shit" a lot. Men not so much.
Same reason they don’t check their messages
cherokeepatti · 61-69, F
It’s a girl thing in some social crowds
Notsimilarreally · 31-35, F
Like I don't know. Jeez like. Go away
JimFarris16 · 18-21, M
@Notsimilarreally That's my girlfriend. lol
ShaneMckay · 41-45, M
They are asking you to "like" anything they say. Similar to asking permission to speak, I think. They don't understand that the word "like" usually means "similar to but not the same as".
JimFarris16 · 18-21, M
@ShaneMckay You mean "Like, how's this dress?"
ShaneMckay · 41-45, M
@JimFarris16 They are telling you they are asking you to say you like it, NOT your opinion on the dress
JimboSaturn · 51-55, M
It's fascinating how that crept into our language. I'll have to look that up.

🤔.........Word.....
A lot of younger people have never experienced the invasion of the Valley girls. This was a movement in the early to mid 1980s, in which all girls all across America inexplicably picked up what was known as the Valley girl accent. Using the word "like" as a filler word was just one of the numerous heinous crimes against the English language committed by people using that dialect.

Here's a helpful video that describes the very barebones basics of how to sound like a Valley girl.

It stuck around after the Valley Girl era for some reason.

@NativePortlander1970 that preceeded even her. Mad Magazine used to satarize it in the 70's
@Gumba1000 Yep, that is her actual given name.
@sladejr Regardless, she still was around it before MAD Magazine satirized it, so she has claim to it.
