Why do some women constantly say the word "like"?

My girlfriend does it all the time, is there a reason women do that?

It stuck around after the Valley Girl era for some reason.

@NativePortlander1970 Sorry that reference goes over my head. I'm not from USA, could you explain it please?

@NativePortlander1970 I cannot stand to listen to Drew Barrymore on her talk show because of the way she talks… dated Valkey Girl it seems

@Gumba1000 The 1980's had a lot of slang, Valley Girl was one style out of southern California that was popular with the mall rats.
@cherokeepatti She's one that never grew up out of her 80's persona.

@NativePortlander1970 yeah know someone who lived there a couple years and he would say oooh a Valley Girl when he heard them talking and would get sour looks 😆

@NativePortlander1970 it’s sad when someone hits middle age and talks that way

@NativePortlander1970 Oh right. So it was a slang that go popularised by the movie
@cherokeepatti I had a couple of younger paternal cousins in Portland at that time, sisters to each other, that got into it, much to the hard eye rolls of my uncle.
@Gumba1000 Exactly, the term was coined by Moon Unit Zappa, the daughter of the late progressive rocker, Frank Zappa.

@Gumba1000 Yep, that is her actual given name.
@sladejr Regardless, she still was around it before MAD Magazine satirized it, so she has claim to it.
