Do you dream of having a library?

I think it would be awesome to have a room dedicated to books. Shelves from the floor to the ceiling. With a ladder to reach the highest shelves. Comfy chairs to sit while reading and a seat in the windowsill. On instagram and pinterest are lots of pictures of interesting libraries. Very inspiring.

I almost had that, except for the library ladder, in my old house. I had a loft office over the master bedroom. Their were stairs down to that floor, adjoining what amounted to an aviary with glass patio doors at ground level to the backyard. Across the wall opposite from the backyard was a sort of bridge with floor to ceiling book shelves. The loft itself had views in all four directions, including San Francisco Bay to the west, and in addition to my desk, a window seat and a Swedish-style metal pedestal fireplace. When we downsized I took 35 boxes of books to the local library's used book store, and kept an equal number.

My current office is smaller. But I do have two 6 foot high bookcases and a 5 foot bookcase -- both overflowing -- and a four foot shelving above a portion of the desk. And most of the boxes of books I brought with me still stacked in the garage.

I'm well under way... I have about 1600 books on my shelves

@Tracos That's great. What is your most recent purchase?
Tracos · 51-55, M
@Tamara68 not a particular fun one... and one I'm reluctant to get started on....

I already have one. Well sort of.

Its an old serverts quarters that is built into our house and has a separate kitchen. Well the kitchen area hasn't been used as one for like a 100 years at least.

So I use the old cabinets that once held food and dishes. They now hold all my books and stuff.

The kitchen still has the old cast iron sink and wood/coal fire oven cook stove in place. And yes before you ask. They still work and still get used from time to time

@HumanEarth It would be awesome to see pictures of it. 🙂

Well, I don't exactly have that, but I do have books falling about all over the place......bedside cabinets, in an actual official bookcase, stuck on top of various tables, among other things in a display cabinet, stuck down the side of places, in the top of a wardrobe. Those are the REAL books, the ones you can love and feel the heft of. Then my kindle, on which I have a library of literally 1000's - easy to change the font size of the type for my sometimes tired old eyes.

Yes! At my school the library had three galleried levels, big windows (with lots of natural lighy), and lots of nooks and crannies where you could read comfortably for hours. I would like something like that 😌

That’s exactly what I have in my living room, including the rolling ladder!
Jeephikelove · 51-55, F
@Harmonium1923 jealous. ❤

There's a four-story used bookstore in the city here called Kings it's known worldwide. It's on a prime piece of property in the heart of the city.
It's a miracle the place hasn't gone up in flames there are old books sitting on hot radiators.
These are a few books I haven't put in boxes.
The libraries around here sell you all the books you can carry for a dollar and throw many books in the dumpster.
Was nice just looking through pics. Thanks for your post. 🙂

Lost several such libraries. Need to build my current one up some more. It's only two book cases. And I just got those two a few weeks ago.
Gangstress · 41-45, F
@DeWayfarer little by little. Its such a shame though
DeWayfarer · 61-69, M
@Gangstress true. I have recently said: if I had found everything that I have lost, I would need a warehouse to put it in.

My libraries would have be apart of that warehouse. No room to put it.

No, I have two shelves that are full and I know I don't even need all those books. I just can't make myself give them away. Plus there are plenty of books in other rooms I never read and maybe never will. I'm not sure what would I keep in my library. It's also a bit inconvenient if you want to search for something particular. In E-book, you just use a search option and it throws you straight to the page you want.
I kinda have one. Small. But it's a lot.

I have a room full of books on floor to ceiling shelves, but I'm in the process of thinning the stock. I've donated about 30 history books to the local library in the past month. Many more to be donated since the shelves still seem to be full.

I have a room with bookshelves on all four walls. Some are almost floor to ceiling. But it's not all that impressive as it is only 4 x 5 m and I can reach the top shelves without a ladder.
StyleCat · M
I could certainly use the shelf space. Mostly for my models and collectibles.
Aysel · F
Though that would be lovely, I don't dream of it.

A reading room with a view

I don't like reading at all.
Musicman · 61-69, MVIP
Yes I have actually. It was also the master bedroom with the bed in the middle.
