$10 for a book from Goodwill is outrageous!
otherspect · 51-55, M
As someone who used to work in bookstores, both new books bookstores and secondhand ones, yeah, that seems steep, especially it being Goodwill. But then times have changed, prices have gone up in every sector. Not that they should, but they have.
Where I live you can’t find used books that cheap anymore except for possibly at an outlet that’s similar to Goodwill.
Nice finds by the way :-) I love old books. I miss being surrounded by the smell of them, in the bookshops.
Edit: Oh, I misread your post. I didn’t see that it was *new* books selling at $10. No, that is not steep these days. That is quite cheap.

@LavidaRaq that's a cool idea. So basically, food trucks that sell books instead of food :-p hehe. Actually that would be a great idea... a coffee & pastry truck that also sells books to go with your breakfast, hehe
LavidaRaq · F
@otherspect yes! Books and book merchandise. They have lines to get in.
otherspect · 51-55, M
@LavidaRaq nice :-)

I love listening to people reading and also reading to other people. I do this with my adopted daughter to encourage her reading habit and it has become an important part of our relationship.
LavidaRaq · F
@SunshineGirl that’s great. She will always love reading and think of you when she finds good books that’s amazing
otherspect · 51-55, M
@SunshineGirl I feel like for a child, the sound of a voice reading is soothing, too. Maybe it harkens back to the tradition of oral storytelling, when families / clans would sit around a fire and listen to each other swapping yarns. There’s something very human about that. Good on you for reading to your child.

Most books on coin collecting are between £10 and £20 on Amazon... so I don't think it's that expensive for brand new books - not when you factor in what it goes through to get from the author's brain to your bookcase.
The only thing I don't like is that some books on coin collecting are often out of date the minute you add them to your basket.

@HootyTheNightOwl these books were not about collecting they had many romance novels, it looked as though a bookstore had maybe gone out of business.
HootyTheNightOwl · 41-45
@LavidaRaq The most expensive romance novel I saw on page 1 of Amazon was £10.45, for a paperback. Add in Prime or postage and you're already paying more than Goodwill charged.
WillaKissing · 56-60, M
Yes, steep price I think for today for the books.
I lie being read too, but I am not one that gets into poetry much, more into stories.

LavidaRaq · F
@WillaKissing yeah I don’t go there for new books. Used and older ones are fine with me. So it was odd to see them priced so high
WillaKissing · 56-60, M
@LavidaRaq I agree with you!
letshavefun · 51-55, M
Sometimes I find that they can be a bit expensive, but I do find some good old ones sometimes and that's fun 🙂
Harmonium1923 · 56-60, M
I prefer reading to someone else rather than having someone read to me. And poetry is perfect for reading aloud.
LavidaRaq · F
@Harmonium1923 I think I would love someone reading poetry to me.
KingofBones1 · 46-50, M
I would love to have somebody reading to me especially a good story or something relaxing. Especially if I was with an intimate someone and I could lay in their lap while they did
LavidaRaq · F
@KingofBones1 exactly
Before the reselling scavenger hunt began they couldn’t give them away for a dollar.. in years past most books were fifty cents or a dollar
@otherspect
I beg to differ, just two years ago the three nearest goodwill stores near me all sold paper backs for fifty cents and hard covers were mostly a dollar unless it was something unusual.
Where I shopped today had paper back books for 99 cents

@Telcontar I think we're talking about different things. I was talking about average going rate for used books at secondhand bookstores, you are talking specifically about places like Goodwill. Prices also depend on where you live.
@otherspect
You’re correct, I was talking about exactly what the poster was referring too, she found the overpriced book at goodwill.
And my comment was about how much they have changed their prices.
She made no reference to used book stores at all and neither did I

Bleak House will keep you busy for awhile
ChipmunkErnie · 70-79, M
$10 a book, particularly for a new book, seems cheap to me.
LavidaRaq · F
@ChipmunkErnie I will check them out, thanks
ChipmunkErnie · 70-79, M
@LavidaRaq It's a sort of clearing house for hundreds, maybe thousands of smaller book stores and dealers. LOTS of used books, plus new ones. Just type in a book or an author and find all kinds of prices, editions, etc.
LavidaRaq · F
@ChipmunkErnie oh nice! Thank you again
SomeMichGuy · M
New @ $10? hmmm
If new would be $20+...not bad.

I'm old enough to remember when goodwill was true discount, books for 25 cents, shirts for 50 cents, jeans for two bucks, 15 bucks could get you a couch, 5 bucks got you a basic stereo or boom box, 7 bucks a 13inch television, dishes, pots, pans, utensils, dirt cheap, 25 cent drinking glasses, etc.
LavidaRaq · F
@NativePortlander1970 yes! I expect cheaper books when I go there
NativePortlander1970 · 51-55
@LavidaRaq So so I
