I suppose anything with a good plot if it's fiction.
Can't be doing with in depth characterization.
Just give me the basics and let my imagination fill in the rest.
That may be why I read so little modern day fiction.
I think the older you get the more you come to want the old reliable stuff you collect and re-read again and again.

reading was in phases to me.
When i was in my teens it was action adventure books some hooro books (like Stephen KIng) and sometimes creative writing. In college I studed a lot and only read a few books but I do remember reading a few non fiction books--
Up to 3 years after college I was so tired of all the reading I did in college i did not read at all. But in the rest of my 20's i learned towards non fiction, in general with a wide vareity in topics
In my 30's i read the bible most of the bhagavid, most of the qoran, buddhist texts on the 8 path a ton of philosophy books and eventually realized i was an atheist i also keep reading non fiction--i read in my 30's
In my 40's i started migrating back to fiction more books on a variety of topics but not so much action and I stopped reading horror completely --i read some philosophy but not much
in my 50's it almost all fiction for me. Just about anything but romance novels

When I'm listening to audio books, they have been either self motivation books or books of sociology theory and ideas. I have really slowed down the amount I read. I think it is because I get a lot of information from podcasts which are a lot like audiobooks.

Modern Japanese novels, such as Yoko Ogawa and Meiji Kawasmi
George’s Simenon: Maiget detective novels
Ernest Hemingway: macho and nostalgia. I love his succinct style and understatement.

Depends on my mood...
But I mostly read non-fiction (political studies, philosophy, history and sociology). Sometimes I just go for fiction... could be a classic or just something that caught my eye. And I continuously read some kind of comic (can be anything, depends on what caught my eye... I'm not a big fan of the overly American superhero stuff).

Thrillers. Murder mystery stuff. Some romance /erotica but most of that is often rubbish for me.
