Yeah, I heard about that on the news the other day. Pretty cool. I'd like to see them in person.

Yes thought to be from Victorian travellers to the U.S who brought saplings back from their travels since they're not a traditional native species

Saw this and was also surprised. I've seen many in parks, stately home gardens etc., but they're usually just in ones or twos, occasionally a few more. Therefore had never really thought how many there would be in total. They're still babies, only a few hundred years old at most, but they'll keep growing. One question to which I'm not getting an answer is whether they will be capable of self seeding, as the ones I've seen were planted from seeds brought over from California.

@DunningKruger 🤔yes i saw that very interesting and they can live two hundred years too

I have seen them. I spent a little time in Sequoia National park. It was really nice.

Makes sense... a larger land mass with a climate for redwoods. Most of the California redwoods are in a couple of smaller areas.

I heard that recently on The Today programme. I have seen many here in the UK. Beautiful trees.

probably no where near the size or as old as ones in US

@wildbill83 Not at the moment, no

@wildbill83 Give it a few hundred years.
Depends on your definition of "giant."

@ElwoodBlues Indeed. They're nowhere near as big as the Californian ones. But they are Giant Redwood trees nonetheless (and are apparently doing very nicely).
ninalanyon · 61-69, T
@ElwoodBlues It's the species names, sequoiadendron giganteum, etc. Anyway I think a 45 m tree counts as pretty big anywhere. 45 m is 13 storeys high.

That is so cool. I had no idea.

That IS a surprise .
