Ideological Purity

I strikes me how ideological purity is demanded and expected more and more. One has to conform to a political party's entire agenda and talking points, or one really has no space. The same goes for faith communities. One must agree with every piece of every confession and engage in every practice, or one really has no space. That leaves alot of people on the outside looking in-- or just faking for expediency. Why such small tables? It used to be that faith communities, political and social movements, had huge inclusive tables…
I think it also leads to people becoming radical and intolerant. They can't accept any part of the oppositions ideology because they must accept every part of their side's.
extremism & radicalism are more & more common thanks to the lack of factual representation perpetuated & condoned for profit by social media

Some people on social media act as though this is the case but I don't find it myself.

There has to be a minimum program, a shared vision and a coherent ideology or a political project is a waste of time. You have debates within that. I guess it is hard for you because your views fall between different political traditions.
@Burnley123 In pragmatic terms, it’s not that difficult. I am largely a single issue voter. Voting for scientific research & education. That generally gives me only one option. Finding common ground with people is another matter.

A priest of my secular acquaintance (friend's brother) explained that you cant cherry-pick which bits of a religion to follow. You either swallow it whole or none of it. No thinking for yourself. Total submission to the accepted version, or none

Agreed. Like huge sweeping thoroughfares with a range of ideologies walking together toward a similar endpoint. Feels more like traversing a small ledge waiting to get shoved off at the slightest hint of non agreement.

I definitely understand that. I’ve been advised that I’m "not a true leftist" because of my feelings about illegal immigration, and the fact that I’m not for completely banning guns or cars (the latter might’ve been person-specific). My response was, "then I guess I’m not”. Other people have been choosing the label they think that fits. I know I’m not a conservative, and most of my politics fall into the liberal/progressive category.

Did they? (faith communities)
@SW-User Or in the political sphere, welcoming a broad coalition of views to build consensus on shared issues, as opposed to litmus testing views and attitudes for true believers.

@CopperCicada Got you. Yes, that's so true actually. You were valued regardless of any number of factors
SW-User
@CopperCicada yes, I already understood you on that one
