I am the jerk here?

My mom and her side is all native American. She has this feather fan on display in the living room. A bunch of us were over for dinner yesterday and I made a comment about how it looked kinky with these leather tassle things hanging from the handle. I picked it up and pretended to smack my one sister's butt with it while laughing. My mom got offended as did my oldest sister. I have 2 older sisters. I got lectured essentially. I still don't think making a joke is wrong.

While I understand you were trying to be hunorous many Native Americans connect feathers to our creator. A lot of spiritual rituals are centered around earth elements including feathers because some tribes consider them a gift from the creator beyond the sky. Feather fans are used as part of cleansing rituals like smudging or even may represent the life of a person that has passed on. I would never call someone a jerk without knowing the whole story but I would suggest you approach your mom when things aren't as heated and ask her to tell you more about the importance of the fan. I would say the fan is a remembrance from a person that has passed and she will probably go in depth on the types and colors of the feathers and what they represent. I hope they forgive you and everyone can move on.

@Astro Now you know and maybe she won't be so uptight.

@Fungirlmmm Hard to say, this is the same woman who wouldn't let my sisters and I watch peter pan as children because of how the native Americans were portrayed.

@Astro So you should have known how important her heritage is to her.
Tumbleweed · F
I get it, it could have been meant as a joke but I have a very good friend who is 100% Navajo and I know they hold certain things as very very sacred and I would actually be afraid to make light of it. Native American culture is very powerful and spiritual and I think you crossed a line.

@Tumbleweed You nailed it
Tumbleweed · F
@HumanEarth Thank you 💕
It does sound like something a 12 year old would do
sben4200 · 51-55, M
@FreeSpirit1 Agreed.. it sounds pretty childish and disrespectful to his mother and her culture.
cherokeepatti · 61-69, F
@FreeSpirit1 Most 12-year olds would know better than that.

I am a proud Cree Nation native myself. Honestly there's nothing wrong with a joke but when it comes to a tribal or ceremonial item of such great importance that is not something to joke about that is like making fun of somebody's heritage. Or insulting the ancestors I don't find it hilarious at all
@NativePortlander1970

Kinda harsh? Wouldn't a wise man try his best to set him straight in a positive way?
KingofBones1 · 46-50, M
@rinkydinkydoink but to be set straight he has to be willing to listen. For a deaf ear hears and learns nothing

Jokes are one thing, using a sacred item isn’t!!
HumanEarth · 56-60, F
I'm part Native American and I would find that offensive and disrespectful.
DrWatson · 70-79, M
I don't think that saying " I was just making a joke" automatically counts as a defense. Jokes can be offensive and hurtful.

If you, unknowingly, were mocking something of religious significance, why not treat this as a learning experience, apologize, and explain that now you know better?
Apparently prayer type ceremonial fans aren't meant to be joke props.

That goes along with the problem statement...
ChipmunkErnie · 70-79, M
We live in a society where catering the the offended is paramount. EVERYBODY seeks out something to offend themselves.
@ChipmunkErnie This guy would cause mass panic with the youth of today.

@NativePortlander1970 I watch Youtube "reaction" videos sometimes and it can be quite amusing to watch the younguns gasp when they watch TV and film from the past -- particularly the comedy material. "oh my god, they said THAT!!??" etc.
@ChipmunkErnie LOL They're hilarious to watch, or when shown old technology.
I'm sure you meant no harm but I can see how they might be offended.
@NativePortlander1970 To be honest, I don't really understand it.
@Spoiledbrat Native American culture is steeped in spirituality, most objects have deep meaning one way or another, whether positive or negative. Feathers especially have high significance due to them belonging to birds, the most respected of all creatures. @cherokeepatti knows exactly what I mean.
Astro · 56-60, M
@NativePortlander1970 That's what my mother told me. She was upset I didn't know better.
Justmeraeagain · 56-60, F
They may have overreacted, hard to say not being there, but it's their house and their stuff.
So maybe a bit more respect?
Teslin · M
Seems they are very proud of their heritage.
Astro · 56-60, M
@Teslin She is. Even has a little sign in the window that says native american and proud.
Carissimi · F
It sounds like an innocent joke to me.
Astro · 56-60, M
@Carissimi Yeah it was supposed to be. Apparently prayer type ceremonial fans aren't meant to be joke props.
Smack all the butts you can get away with, if that's your thing, have your thing.
Penny · 46-50, F

@OogieBoogie She was most upset that I should have known better. I won't lie growing up I used to block out all the native stuff she'd do or talk about. I was never interested. Yeah I know it's my heritage along with being mexican but I never felt the need to make it my entire identity like her and most of her side of the family.
@Astro its so odd reading that.....my heritage is convicts.
And i know only scraps of my heritage due to , well... barely any records: Just a few names, some assumptions and the country they came from . My grandfathers side is a mystery as he was a drunk and a recluse and German: and that all i know.

If im to be honest....im kinda jealous that your heritage is so rich, so honorable, so full of story and culture, colour and wisdom. (And war and sorrow.... but still...🤷‍♀)

Isnt it funny - here i am lamenting being void of any historic culture.... and there you are wanting so much not to be defined by yours .

We always want what we dont have eh?

If i was you ....(Which is an unfair thing to say i know), id absorb what you can from your mom - theres a world, and a life or more of backstory and wisdom ....that many of us will never have.

You have roots. You are connected to a people.
You don't have to live it - but i bet she would LOVE telling you 🤗

From the outside looking in ...... that's a really beautiful thing.
💜💚
