Ever thought about - and added up - how many times you've moved in your lifetime thus far?

Moving sucks, but so does staying somewhere you've out grown. I've moved at least 16 times in my life - that's all I can remember anyway. This last move was more than I wanted to deal with and I hope it's the last time I ever have to do it again.

What about you? Have you moved a lot or have you stayed pretty much in one place?

12 times with my folks and out and back while I was going to tech school then, seven times, during my two marriages five of those were because my second wife could not stay put. During my second marriage... And then move number 20 in this little apartment where I have been for 16 years now. So actually 21 total counting the move, getting out while I was going to school. 4 of those places I owned I lost two of those places because my second wife couldn't stay put talk about financially being turned upside down. I personally feel like all the moving is a big negative effect when you're growing up because you never get to established any friends for long term. I've been in this little apartment longer than I have anywhere else in my life. I'm 72 and I have no intention of moving again. It's old, beat up, tiny, in the lower floor of a two-story house, but it was home with Vickie for 11 years, and it's home now. It's the only place I've ever been that actually felt like home. I don't know what moving from someplace you've outgrown even means.
LadyBronte · 61-69, F
@Gibbon Yes, I can imagine that moving too much as a kid could be detrimental to having close friends. But I am glad you're in a place now, where you feel it's home. I know you've got some good memories there.

18 times, most of that in childhood
cherokeepatti · 70-79, F
@LadyBronte Disabled Veterans. My father caused a lot of chaos, he had a severe personality disorder. We were living with our aunt & uncle on a farm and he would get jealous and take us away. He was abusive to all of us and my mother would eventually have a breakdown & be hospitalized long-term and then he would pass us back to them or other relatives.

@LadyBronte Well there was a new generation to deal with, my sisters. It was always something but I learned to set boundaries eventually and they haven’t been in my life for quite a while. I only have one adrenal gland now and won’t take any of their stress or any one else’s for that matter.
antonioio · 70-79, M
3 times, counting leaving home, in the same place in the last 40 years
antonioio · 70-79, M
@LadyBronte at a very young age I was determined to own my own
LadyBronte · 61-69, F
@antonioio Nice! Seems it worked out for you!
antonioio · 70-79, M
@LadyBronte it's something I try to get young to think about
kodiac · 26-30, M
Foster kid ,i lost count at least 15
kodiac · 26-30, M
@LadyBronte One or two but i never got to stay long with the good ones
LadyBronte · 61-69, F
@kodiac I'm sorry.
kodiac · 26-30, M
@LadyBronte Thank you
uncalled4 · 56-60, M
Six times. That includes the first apartment my parents occupied, their first house, then a second, my move away to college, back home , and finally to my current home of 28 years.
LadyBronte · 61-69, F
@uncalled4 You have been pretty settled. That's awesome.
A dozen for moi 🤦‍♂. It’s a pain in the arse, literally 😒
LadyBronte · 61-69, F
@DelightfulyDelectablyDelicious I agree! I hate moving!!
GoFish ·
at least 12 times if not more
GoFish ·
@LadyBronte yeah 😬 my family bought land in the early 90’s and have lived there ever since but before that there was more than a few moves and after i left there were numerous more but my hub and i own a tiny house now so we will probably stay here.. sigh
LadyBronte · 61-69, F
@GoFish Being settled is a good thing. Yes?
GoFish ·
@LadyBronte i guess
15 Times ...I'll probably move one last time and that would be to downsize
LadyBronte · 61-69, F
@cherny There always has to be a downsize. We spend the first 3/4 of our lives collecting things and the last 1/4 getting rid of it. I understand though and what it makes it easier is that so much of what I have isn't nearly as important to me as it once was. Easier to let go of for sure.
@LadyBronte absolutely...I'm slowly chipping away at that but ny son keeps buying things
LadyBronte · 61-69, F
@cherny Ah when we're younger, things hold more value than they do as we get older. Your son will figure it out.
AthrillatheHunt · 56-60, M
What’s the longest you’ve lived somewhere and where was it ?
LadyBronte · 61-69, F
@AthrillatheHunt The longest was 30+ years and that was near my hometown.
HikingMan · 51-55, M
I’m at 18 times.

Moving is the worst!
LadyBronte · 61-69, F
@HikingMan I agree. It is the worst!! 18 times is quite a lot, too. I hope never to do it again!
BrandNewMan · 61-69, M
About 4 times over 16 yrs in one town, including college. Later, 1 move 600+ miles /3 states away, 1 move of 1300 miles/5 states away already in the can. I have at least one more of 700 miles/4 states away yet to come.

They were all good choices ..
LadyBronte · 61-69, F
@BrandNewMan I would say most of mine were good choices as well - at least at the time. Wishing you luck on your next - and maybe final move. Sure hoping this is my final move as well. So far, it's been a good decision.
BrandNewMan · 61-69, M
@LadyBronte Thanks, we'll see. Part of me still wants to go out west.
WillaKissing · 61-69, M
8 Moves as a child through my adult life. I can't count the Army moving me once every year or two, because most of that revolved around packing my duffle bags and having a TV and a few things shipped to the new barracks room at the new post by the Army. The longest the Army left in in one place was one nearly two years.
LadyBronte · 61-69, F
@WillaKissing Military life is a different ballgame for sure - for the entire family. 8 moves as a child - were you parents in the military?
ninalanyon · 70-79, TVIP
Twelve times altogether but I've settled in one place now for the last thirty eight years.
LadyBronte · 61-69, F
@ninalanyon Being settled is nice!
3 times. Pretty much within the same 30 mile radius. Not a fan, I still have things stored from the last move because I have nowhere to put them.
LadyBronte · 61-69, F
@BrewCityBarfly I have just moved and I ended up getting rid of a lot of things I no longer had the room for. I didn't want to have boxes just sitting around for the kids to go through (and most likely throw away) after I'm gone.
@LadyBronte I've been going through things slowly over time, but also have a section of plastic storage bins in the basement that belongs to my ex because she doesn't have a storage area in her condo.
I usually ask my kids if I come across something if they would want it. My son's reaction is always "no", my daughter says "no" then a few minutes later "well".
LadyBronte · 61-69, F
@BrewCityBarfly Gotcha. Sounds like some things are getting a home. Nice.
MaryJo1996 · 26-30, F
Always lived in the same house.
LadyBronte · 61-69, F
@MaryJo1996 Wow. That's unusual, but very cool.
CrazyMusicLover · 31-35
Never, still at the same places and don't count a dorm, that's not moving.
CrazyMusicLover · 31-35
@DelightfulyDelectablyDelicious Isn't it the same in my case? 😆
@CrazyMusicLover True, you’re country’s are very close togeather 😀
LadyBronte · 61-69, F
@CrazyMusicLover Very cool. Not many people can say that!!
whowasthatmaskedman · 70-79, M
I relocated countries and hemispheres (not languages thank goodness) three times before I was 12 years old.That disruption to family and friendships stayed with me forever. My wife was also a teenage migrant, so we shared the need for Stability for ourselves and our children. We purchased our building block in 1973. And I still live there, with no plans to move..😷
LadyBronte · 61-69, F
@whowasthatmaskedman Nice you could build a happy life there and enjoy your shared stability.
Some of my moves were to different states, but all were within the country.
James1956 · 70-79, M
Mostly because of job transfers I’ve lived in five states and about 20 or so different cities. Spent 30 days in a hotel in a sixth state.
LadyBronte · 61-69, F
@James1956 Hotel living is hard. I did that once for about that long. You've had a lot of moves.
James1956 · 70-79, M
@LadyBronte
Thankfully I am now settled for the rest of my life. .
LadyBronte · 61-69, F
@James1956 Nice!
scorpiolovedeep · 51-55, M
Under 21 - 1 time
21 to 29 - 3 times - moved to 1 country
29 to 38 - 6 times - .moved to 2 other countries
38 to now - 5 times - Life in Australia.

Total of 15 times over my lifetime across 4 countries.
LadyBronte · 61-69, F
@scorpiolovedeep Wow. 4 countries. That's interesting! Some very different experiences, I'm sure.
hunkalove · 70-79, M
I have it all written down somewhere. Haven't looked at it in a while. I've lived here almost 18 years.
LadyBronte · 61-69, F
@hunkalove Nice.
RebelRaven · 51-55, F
I had to write down every place I lived at since I was 18 for my job and ya…27 times. 😬 Add 9 times before I was 18.
LadyBronte · 61-69, F
@RebelRaven Wow! That's a lot. Military moves?
RebelRaven · 51-55, F
@LadyBronte no, just circumstances. 😕
valentinesdaywife · 41-45, F
Holy crap, never thought about it ... 11 times!
samueltyler2 · 80-89, M
@valentinesdaywife were you in the military?
valentinesdaywife · 41-45, F
@samueltyler2 No.. couple of apartments early in life we hated, hubby got a new job, home upgrades, several moves as a kid.. etc
samueltyler2 · 80-89, M
@valentinesdaywife that adds up a lot. I was in the military and moved 4 times in 2 years, other thsn that 2x before medical.school, each year in school, one tome then before the Navy and 4 timrs since. I guess i have you beaten then.
DunningKruger · 61-69, M
9, not counting temporary things.
LadyBronte · 61-69, F
@DunningKruger I counted my temporaries - college, etc.
Musicman · 61-69, M
Five times. Two as a kid and three as an adult. I think we are in our forever home now. So when was your last move? Did you stay in the area or relocate?
LadyBronte · 61-69, F
@Musicman Recently. Moved to another state and a few hours away from the old place. Hopefully it's my last move.

Same here - too many, about 18 or so and all over the world. I was done with about four moves ago, but circumstances and events wasn't done with me.

Ha! thought of another two. Seems like I can't remember all of them😁
LadyBronte · 61-69, F
@Ontheroad Lol. I know it's difficult to remember them all. I'm not sure I got all the apartments in the city. enough moving though, I hope I'm settled!
Ontheroad · M
@LadyBronte I'm so settled that the one move I have REALLY wanted to make (half way across the country) is on what I call my "permanent maybe" list. As in it will forever remain on that list with nothing more than dreams of doing it.
LadyBronte · 61-69, F
@Ontheroad Never say never. Right?
Not one to reminisce (Wow! Spelled reminisce correctly without help!) or whatever. Been where I am now the longest: 34 years.
LadyBronte · 61-69, F
@rinkydinkydoink That is quite a long while. Good for you.
candycane · 36-40, F
