how did someone get my debit card info to use it if I had it with me the whole time

I found out yesterday someone was using my debit card without permission, the bank cancelled their transactions so they didn't take my money but now I cant use my card thanks to the idiot that used it, its hard to go to the store now or do anything now cause I have to wait for a new card now. my apt bldg has a grocery store downstairs and they've been letting me pay with a check but not everyone does that. don't have much cash around cause I've always used my debit card instead of cash unless I'm using quarters for laundry. how can I buy stuff in the meantime while I'm waiting for the new card? how can I protect my new card from fraud? and why would someone do that, does the police investigate these type of fraud? hope they catch the jerk. any suggestions on how to prevent that from happening again and how to be able to buy stuff if I don't have my card anymore? a new one is coming in a couple of days but being the 4th is going to be here soon, that's more waiting time cause of the holiday and weekend

Go to the bank with your check and draw out some money. I don't think there's too many places that won't take a check but I know there are some. So in that case just cash a check at the bank and you'll have some money until your card comes in. I'm so sorry this happened to you. And if you're out of checks you can always go to the bank and they'll give you some temporary ones until your card comes. I hope your card comes soon. 🌹🫂
There are reasons banks now put shields (physical blocks) above the keypad at an ATM because it happens people install cameras and then a chip scanner where you insert your card. They have enough info then to use your card if you fall victim to this. Also, a lot of new phone cases include magnets to prevent RF scanning of this info. From your situation you described, even if the atm has one of those physical blocks above the keypad, place your hand above the keypad when you input your PIN.

I'm glad the bank cancelled their transactions for you. That you also have the fortune that the grocery store has accepted your checks in understanding.

Had a similar incident recently of someone using my credit card. Reported it and the bank refunded me, going back a couple of months.
Glad it was only for very small charges each time, guess so I wouldn't notice.
Bank issued me a new card.

Funny as I checked to see on my online statements where I've been using the card and it showed only the places that I frequently go to.
It did cross my mind that maybe it could be one of the employees.

Good luck. Check your email settings as well as clear things with the issuers. Someone hacked in and set my settings to forward all emails to them. They were the. Able to use that to establish an entirely new ID using the email and changed passwords on credit cards! It took months to straighten it out!

Some on skimmed your card. report it to the police as we.. And to your bank and credit card company. Because it could be a massive data breach. Always have some spare cash on hand. you can go to your bank and get some cash out, from a teller window. have you have Id and bank information

I do not know what one could do while waiting, but honestly, cash is once again the safest way to pay.
Using a bank card just makes it way too easy for the crooks to steal info.

I was going to recommend locking your bank card when it is not in use but if you use it all the time, locking and unlocking constantly would be a hassle.

If you decide to do that, your bank's web page will have a place to do that, pretty simple.

It’s happened to me too. They somehow got my bank card information and we’re using it all over town at a city. I’ve never even been to.

More reason to keep little on a debit card. That is your money - not the bank's.

You are virtually blameless if someone uses your credit card. You cancel the card and they do a fraud investigation. The one time it happened to me I got every cent back easily - even the foriegn conversion rates

Someone was using it in brothels throughout Europe. Including, shockingly, Russia 😳😳😳

It happened to us. We had to close the account and open a new one with a new debit card and account number.

Ask your bank for a virtual card (ie not physical) and use it to pay online or on your phone via Apple/Android. You can change the card instantly if you suspect wrongdoing. No need to wait for a new physical card.

Never use your physical card.

You need an RFID wallet. I've heard cards can be cloned !

Either you used a compromised machine that stole the info or you don't have an rfid blocking wallet, as all new cards emit a signal
That signal is what allows for tap to pay. That signal can also be exploited to steal your info
i buy a "gift card" and keep it t a low balance.
that way my REAL bank card balance is safe

There’s different ways hackers steal info online or on existing card devices or just while standing next to you in the store.. there’s all types of thieves and crooks
Happened to me. I think there was a skimming device the thieves installed on the ATM.
more than likely it some one you know,

Most time it's a friend you know, that's what I've always seen

Someone may have used a scanner thing while it was in your pocket or while using it there may have been a skimmer device on the card machine you used.
