"Complicated Relationship", to me, means I'm with someone but let's skip that conversation.

I think it's that it's not a traditional relationship. It could be an open relationship or poly relationship. One that's not easy to just outright state in a common way.

All relationships are unique and complicated, especially if they work. For someone to go to the trouble to make that vague statement, to me, means they do not want to talk about it because it's not traditional or possibly morally correct.

They may be close friends but no.plans on marriage. May not even live together. That's where I'm at.

When someone tells me they’re in any kind of relationship I hear that as unavailable to me. I’d never knowingly become someone’s "side piece".

It means they live together, but never have sex. They share expenses and both know if they separate they lose half of everything. Maybe they are only together for the kids. It's complicated.

I take it they have enough on their plate already and I can only stay around as a friend.
