What do you make of it when someone says they are in a “complicated relationship”?

Do you take it to mean they are available or could be available or do you stay far away? Or maybe tread lightly?

When someone tells me they’re in any kind of relationship I hear that as unavailable to me. I’d never knowingly become someone’s "side piece".
