What do you make of it when someone says they are in a “complicated relationship”?

Ultimately, it's essential to prioritize respect for the person's current relationship and boundaries. Tread lightly .

I think it's that it's not a traditional relationship. It could be an open relationship or poly relationship. One that's not easy to just outright state in a common way.

When someone tells me they’re in any kind of relationship I hear that as unavailable to me. I’d never knowingly become someone’s "side piece".

It means I stay out of their relationship.
I don't do good with the cryptic anyway say what the heck you mean or I ain't going to try to guess.
I'm sure that many people who cheat on their partner start by saying the relationships they are in currently is "complicated."

It usually makes me think it’s an on and off again thing or like a rocky relationship that might be over?
