What do you make of it when someone says they are in a “complicated relationship”?

Do you take it to mean they are available or could be available or do you stay far away? Or maybe tread lightly?

All relationships are unique and complicated, especially if they work. For someone to go to the trouble to make that vague statement, to me, means they do not want to talk about it because it's not traditional or possibly morally correct.
