What do you make of it when someone says they are in a “complicated relationship”?

Do you take it to mean they are available or could be available or do you stay far away? Or maybe tread lightly?

It means they live together, but never have sex. They share expenses and both know if they separate they lose half of everything. Maybe they are only together for the kids. It's complicated.
