If money doesn't buy happiness why do we judge the success of nations by their GDPs?

And why do we measure liberty by the ability to amass wealth rather than by measuring the things someone can do without it?

Money isn't the most important thing. But having enough is right up there with oxygen.

@Skippyskiptic would not the pursuit of liberty to try to ensure that even the poorest have that much?
Skippyskiptic · 41-45, M
@ViciDraco this is the wealthiest society that has ever existed in the history of the planet. There are more overweight people than starving. There will always be poor people. If you want to help change that you need to make as much money as possible and do something about it. If you have nothing, you can't give anything.
i have lots to say but i'll just say that corporations pretty much rule the world at this point. you have to have a job to have healthcare usually, and basic things. that's mostly all, but some go crazy for it. people feel the need to compare with movie stars and try to live as comfortably as possible. it's relatable to want that, but this is not a sustained way of living for us, & war isn't the answer either, unless you want to live through the end of nuclear disasters and try to live in that place.

Simon Kuznets, the guy that created the concept behind GDP, worked with the Department of Commerce during The Great Depression in order for the government to have some kind of way of measuring the economic well-being of the nation.

Kuznets made his opposition known to the US government that GNP (the predecessor to GDP) was not an ideal way to measure economic health, success, or quality of life, but the government was more interested in establishing its credibility than about actually being accountable to the people.

There has always been incredibly rich people throughout history. That will never change. Some started with nothing but built empires while others inherited wealth.
Henry Ford started out as a mechanic.
There are hundreds more examples.

To list a couple of rich people who started as regular joes;
Jeff Bezos started out as a regular guy with an idea to create a web based store that sold everything back when people thought that was a crazy idea.
Larry Ellison started out as a regular guy building databases but had an idea that all our info could be accessed from databases.
You gotta start somewhere. It’s just a matter of getting your idea to work. Some do, thousands don’t.
Because more money generally means more freedom and health.
I do disagree with judging a country by its overall GDP. It should go by GDP per capita. That's a way better metric of living standards.

It doesn’t buy happiness but it does create economic prosperity and well being.
