If money doesn't buy happiness why do we judge the success of nations by their GDPs?

And why do we measure liberty by the ability to amass wealth rather than by measuring the things someone can do without it?

To list a couple of rich people who started as regular joes;
Jeff Bezos started out as a regular guy with an idea to create a web based store that sold everything back when people thought that was a crazy idea.
Larry Ellison started out as a regular guy building databases but had an idea that all our info could be accessed from databases.
You gotta start somewhere. It’s just a matter of getting your idea to work. Some do, thousands don’t.
