And why do we measure liberty by the ability to amass wealth rather than by measuring the things someone can do without it?

There has always been incredibly rich people throughout history. That will never change. Some started with nothing but built empires while others inherited wealth.
Henry Ford started out as a mechanic.
There are hundreds more examples.
