I am concerned because the guy somehow was not charged with a pretty serious crime last year (bomb threat). And his granddad apparently is an ultra-MAGA politician. So because he was not charged and his record wiped, he was allowed to legally purchase guns...
Shows me once again that Republicans want to go absolutely NOTHING to curb mass shootings.

It matters procedurally. Classification allows the government to ask for special funding, to track this at the Federal Level, as opposed to keeping these incidents buried at the local level.

@Northwest Oh. Well, I'm all for the guy doing fed time.

Legally there might not be a difference, socially there is.
There was a similar question in my country about femicide, does it count as worse than murder? The truth is legally femicide is just homicide. Some people might believe that changing the legal status will contribute to equality, personally I don't have enough knowledge on the matter to have an opinion.
Although the motive is important in many legal cases but could result in us talking about details, like him getting 5 more years or something.

Yeah because the question is how scared other LBGT+ people should be.
LordShadowfire · 46-50, M
@CountScrofula Okay, yeah, there's that. But the question people are asking right now is what charges should be filed. I don't personally GAF, as long as he rots in jail for the rest of his life with big Bubba.

Not necessarily. Insanity pleas happen. If a hate crime was proven I believe that would negate an insanity plea because "hate" is not considered a mental illness. But I believe insanity pleas are a state by state thing. I do know that sexual orientation is protected in CO under hate crime laws.

His GOP State Assembly grandfather should also be investigated. Did the Trump supporting republican from San Diego put his grandson up to commit murder?

@MalteseFalconPunch I mean, the guy went into a gay night club with a gun and started shooting. It's a pretty safe bet he did that because there were gay people in there. I just don't think it should make a difference legally. Dude made the decision to try to kill like 23 people. He succeeded in killing five of them. That alone will get him locked up for life.

Identifying his motivation could highlight a larger problem. But I know what you mean, just lock him up forever.
BackyardShaman · 61-69, M
I’m really afraid he will get by with this and wind up working for Boebert.
LordShadowfire · 46-50, M
@BackyardShaman His grandpa might help with that, you're right.

It matters.

I've always been of two minds about that. Someone comes up and sucker punches you, what do you care what's on his mind? Did he hit me because I was straight? What then?
