Am I the only one who doesn't care whether Anderson Lee Aldrich meant to commit a hate crime when he killed those people?

Just charge him with five counts of murder and however many counts of attempted murder. That'll put the little punk away for life, no matter what his motivations were.

Not necessarily. Insanity pleas happen. If a hate crime was proven I believe that would negate an insanity plea because "hate" is not considered a mental illness. But I believe insanity pleas are a state by state thing. I do know that sexual orientation is protected in CO under hate crime laws.
