Am I the only one who doesn't care whether Anderson Lee Aldrich meant to commit a hate crime when he killed those people?

Just charge him with five counts of murder and however many counts of attempted murder. That'll put the little punk away for life, no matter what his motivations were.

It matters procedurally. Classification allows the government to ask for special funding, to track this at the Federal Level, as opposed to keeping these incidents buried at the local level.
