Suspect kills 10 at Buffalo supermarket mass shooting (this happened today May 14, 2022)

BUFFALO, N.Y. - A gunman in military-style clothing opened fire with a rifle at a supermarket in Buffalo, New York, in what authorities called a "hate crime and racially motived violent extremism," killing 10 people and wounding three others before being taken in custody Saturday afternoon, law enforcement officials said.

How are those gun laws working in Chicago?
MrBrownstone · 46-50, M
@basilfawlty89 Exactly. Laws don’t stop crime.
ninalanyon · 61-69, T
@MrBrownstone That is too universal a statement.
MrBrownstone · 46-50, M
@ninalanyon But it’s true.
Truly a sad day for America. Say no to guns.
@MarmeeMarch if you’re not a gun lover, then why did you say this initially?

Say no to guns ? - really ? you do know that the police have guns and it's good that they were there.

I really don’t get your point of argument then, if you now contradict yourself.

I think you just love to debate n argue…

@Darksideinthenight2 I agree. But there are such cases on both sides. Why should that deter us from seeing the monster in the room?
Every thing finally boils down to having stricter gun laws and thorough training and checks to acquire a gun. Why are we closing our eyes and saying I don’t see a solution? It’s going to cost us much less than what it’s costing us today & in the foreseeable future.

Are "mass shootings" really a threat, Looking at statistics from several countries, is one or two per million really something to fear on a daily basis.

Average (Mean) Annual Death Rate per Million People from Mass Public Shootings (U.S., Canada, and Europe, 2009-2015):
Norway — 1.888
Serbia — 0.381
France — 0.347
Macedonia — 0.337
Albania — 0.206
Slovakia — 0.185
Switzerland — 0.142
Finland — 0.132
Belgium — 0.128
Czech Republic — 0.123
United States — 0.089
Austria — 0.068
Netherlands — 0.051
Canada — 0.032
England — 0.027
Germany — 0.023
Russia — 0.012
Italy — 0.009

In addition, a 2018 CRPC study ranked the U.S. at number sixty-four in the world in terms of mass shooting rates per capita.

I am more likely to die in a car accident because someone is drunk or playing with their cell phone than encountering a mass shooter.

@Graylight How has all the gun laws worked out?
Graylight · 51-55, F
@MrBrownstone What effing gun laws? I can build a shooting range in my backyard if I'm 500 ft away from a school. My state's getting ready for open carry without a license.
MrBrownstone · 46-50, M
@Graylight Do you not know how to look up things online?
Thank you for the efforts made to try and be pro-active putting forth sensible groups to try and counter Trumps cult of hatred. Even though he is no longer president the racist mindset thrives and there is a need for more people to actively support and spread more awareness about these groups and what folks can do to support them.
@Darksideinthenight2 Sadly, fixing the problem you identified is going to take decades to reverse the current mind-set of too many who recognize the mass killing of innocent minorities is a malignant cancer that is so resistive to efforts to try and heal. We had a president who actually asked if military could feasibly go in and shoot BLM protestors, another blatant effort to reinforce entitlement of racism and mass murder.

Tincture of time and folks not afraid to act out and speak up will eventually win this nefarious war that began so many years ago. All we can do is recognize the right thing and do what you can one way or the other.

@Darksideinthenight2 I truly feel and understand the depths of dispair you and countless others are feeling. The road ahead is nearly impossible it's really difficult to get past the barriers but please, Persevere. millions are looking up tp you for hope and the dream that eventually, this war will indeed be won even though right now it seems just beyond your grasp and seems to be a distant impossibility. Just never give up and continue doing the thing in front of you. The kids and so many others , have invested every last shred of hope in you and the others.

@Graylight The numbers never lie, however, I would agree that you can make them say whatever you want if you ask the right question. I question statistics like this one. For example, in 2020 there were 45,000 firearm caused deaths in the US, in a country with 330M people, that is 0.000136 deaths per million people in 2020. Considerable less than the stat from the article. My own experience factors into what I believe. I have owned firearms for 50 years, having started shooting and hunting when I was about 4 years old. They have been a daily thing in my life for those 50 years and I have never been shot at, never used a firearm in the commission of a crime, and know very few people who have had any problem with firearms and I don't know anyone who has been threatened by a mass shooting. I am not denying they happen, but they aren't a safety concern for me any more than getting struck by lightening is. If guns are hard to come by, the Boston bombers proved that those intent to kill others will find a way to do it whether it is a moving truck on a side walk or an IED made from cooking utensils.
Graylight · 51-55, F
@Roadsterrider And we can agree on this. But to say mass shootings isn't a big deal so let's not overreact to the gun issue is a little like saying and over end car flips barely kill anyone, so let's not worry so much about seat belts.
Roadsterrider · 56-60, M
@AthrillatheHunt I can't help what other parents tell their children, but I told my own children what I perceived to be the best information to keep them safe. I am not concerned with what other parents teach, it really isn't any of my business.
Roadsterrider · 56-60, M
@Graylight I didn't say it wasn't a big deal, I said it isn't a concern for me, murder is a big deal. If it were up to me, when there is video or multiple wintnesses, a murderer should go to a death row express lane. I don't live in fear of a mass shooting or even getting shot. I have been in several accidents, seat belts save lives, I am one of them. The chances of me getting killed or injured in a car are far greater than being injured or killed by a firearm, the same applies to every person on the planet. But, there aren't a bunch of politicians trying to get cars outlawed even though they are a greater threat in daily life. There aren't groups who tell falsehoods about car injuries to make it look worse than it really is.

I read a study by the FBI a few years ago about repeat violent offenders, it was about what they feared during violent offenses like murder, robbery and rape. Over 90% feared encountering an armed victim. The same percentage admitted they had not pursued a potential victim because they thought they had a means of defense. Their number 1 concern wasn't getting shot by police, going back to prison, getting arrested, their number 1 fear was an armed victim. That in itself seems a good reason to me to be armed.

Black Flag Op to push racism and riots all summer like 2020?
Carissimi · F
Isn’t it strange how just a few days ago this administration said that white supremacy was the greatest threat to our country, and lo and behold, we have a white guy killing a lot of black people. It’s absolutely horrific, and my heart goes out to those who lost their lives, and their loved ones, but what a coincidence. @Slade
Slade · 56-60, M
@Carissimi Yep. Now he'll be an Epstein in jail
luckranger71 · 51-55, M
@Slade Thanks for the sociopath perspective on all this.
redredred · M
Millions of people with similar guns didn’t shoot anyone. The guns are not the issue. It’s simple logic based on cause and effect.

If this idiot gets a sentence that allows him to EVER seek parole, the justice system is at fault.
MrBrownstone · 46-50, M
@redredred We should ban cars so no one dies from a drunk driver. Problem solved.
redredred · M
@MrBrownstone close the roads and subsidize alcoholics

It baffles me about gun control and human itself. No matter how good gun control is never going to stop human error.

Not everyone deserve to handle guns.
CorvusBlackthorne · 100+, M
@iamelijah I quite agree. Yet the NRA will go to the mountaintops and complain about their rights if one suggests mental health examinations of potential gun buyers.
Slade · 56-60, M
@iamelijah it's a right so the burden of proof is NOT on the individual
Carissimi · F
Racially motivated? They haven’t released anything about the guy yet. I’ve been searching since I heard the news, and there is nothing about him.

All these mass shootings are crazy. The one in the NYC subway still has me in shock then a week later there was another in DC. Now the two in the last two days in this month. It seems like there's a mass shooting every three weeks or so after we started opening back up the country. Too many people crazy people that need help here.
