To more than $130bn as imports spiked in response to the threat of tariffs.

It REALLY scares me knowing the far right is in power! 😭😭😭 It gives me anxiety because I have a disabled son and mildly autistic daughter and I have autism myself and not only that but the amount of poverty in this country is sooooo heartbreaking that the last thing this country needs is a far right government but sadly lots of Americans disagree! 🤦‍♀🤦‍♀🤦‍♀ I wish we had universal healthcare and did a better job at looking after those below the poverty line and to cut programs that help poor people just to give the rich more money is horrible in my opinion but as Jesus said "it is easier for a Camel to walk though the eye of a needle than a rich person to enter the Kingdom of God" so I think if we are a Christian nation we should do better to look after the vulnerable, poor, disabled, elderly and children! 😔😔😔

@BizSuitStacy I work as a receptionist in a small hospital so of course I pay taxes however I am willing for my taxes to be higher to give the poor the same quality healthcare as the rich which is how it should be! 😇😇😇 Nobody should be treated better medically just because they have no money and tax paid healthcare is free at point of use which is more compassionate to the poor and this is coming from someone with a good paying job and good healthcare insurance however I also understand not everyone is as fortunate as I am and lots of poverty is awful so I think the poor should get the same quality healthcare as the rich! 😇😇😇

@Heartlander The drugs trade is probably the most perfectly globalised commerce that exists (if you exclude small scale cannabis farming). Much of the current demand stems from poor health and lukewarm regulation. Lack of economic opportunity may also drive drug use, but I doubt many people would view dealing as a viable alternative to a legitimate job.
@MommyLucy tRUMP is all about lowering the quality and increasing the costs of health care for all Americans.

Remember how he ran on “Repeal & Replace”Obamacare in his first misadministration? He said he would replace it with his “beautiful plan.” And as we all found out, there was NO PLAN yet alone a “beautiful plan.” So he called on the completely unprepared Republicans to quickly come up with a plan. That’s when tRUMP made his stupid remark “Who knew health insurance could be so complicated?” The sheer ignorance and incompetence of the man! What they came up with was so terrible EVEN tRUMP said to vote against it! Beautiful example of MAGA IGNORANCE & INCOMPETENCE!

Now, second time around, it’s NO BETTER.

tRUMP & Muskrat are cutting MediCare, MediCaid, have Willy Nilly fired thousands of VA health care employees with no rhythm or reason, and now an internal VA memo has leaked (and incompetent tRUMP CHEERLEADER DOUG COLLINS has confirmed) that by the end of September the VA intends to fire 80,000 health care workers. How did they arrive at this ridiculous number? Some fool just pulled it out of their nether regions.

This amounts to cutting 15% of the VA work force. And with the long overdue PACT ACT brought by the Biden administration the work of the VA is steadily increasing. They targeted VA employment levels at the end of 2019–before President Biden wisely increased the manning levels, thus greatly improving access to care, reducing waiting times, increasing specialty care, and assuring excellence for ALL VETERANS.

Shameful that tRUMP actively courted veterans to vote for him with his vicious LIES in the form of false campaign promises which he had absolutely NO INTENTION OF KEEPING! Quite the opposite, in fact.

The appointment of RFK, Jr as health secretary is a disaster for our health care system. The expanding measles epidemic in Texas is just the tip of the iceberg.

Shame on these Republican Senators approving all these incompetent tRUMP appointees.

Probably why Trump delayed the Tariffs :)

Warehouses are probably now stacked to the ceiling with rushed buys trying to get ahead of the tariffs, and in hope of selling those purchases at higher future prices. But ... tariffs delayed, and now a bit of uncertainty about when they will be imposed.

Look for steep discounts soon as wholesalers rush to clear those inventories. Those rushed purchases were probably paid for with borrowed monies, loans that carry interest, and the longer those purchases sit in the warehouse the more they cost. Look for Trump to delay yet another month or two when middlemen start panicking.

Practically all consumer products are perishable, much like tomatoes and bananas. The longer something sit in the warehouse the greater the need to sell it. Selling something at a loss now is preferable to selling it 2 months from now at a greater loss. Just 2 months? Yea, how many payrolls to meet between now and two months from now?
So eventhough everyone is crapping about Trump's tariffs (which haven't been implemented yet) imports still increased, and the cost of those imports spiked. 😂😂😂

I'm not even sure what your point is.

Watch the trade deficit shift once the tariffs are in place.
@SunshineGirl When Trump won in 2016, the stock market went down initially because everyone expected Hillary to win. All the liberals screamed, "See!? See!? Trump is going to cause a depression." Or did you conveniently forget that. Never happened either.

The market tanked under Biden for a bit. We even had two consecutive quarters of negative GDP. The WH tried to change the definition of a recession.

We had mass inflation under Biden, and the left tried to tell us it was under control when prices wouod stay flat for a month, and then ignore any inflationary pressure the following month.

Trump knows exactly what he's doing. He applied tariffs to China in his first term. No one batted an eye. Suddenly he wins his 2nd term, and the globalists know they're finished, so tariffs are evil...eventhough every country in the world has used them.
And you are hanging on daily economic changes...any little market disruption, and it's the 2016 narrative all over again.

Are tariffs for:

(1) Extracting concessions from or changing the behaviour of other countries? (less than 1% of fentanyl consumed in America crosses the Canada border - the flow of illegal firearms in the opposite direction is far more harmful)
(2) Protecting domestic industries?
(3) Replacing income taxes?
(4) Reducing the fiscal deficit?
You're the one who thinks she's some sort of economics expert. Tariffs have been utilized since before the industrial revolution. Every country uses them. Oh...but they're bad when the orange man does it.

You can't even hide your hypocrisy.

In the meantime, your communist prime minister can't decide what to do about Ukraine, but the Nazi will happily jail anyone posting a meme complaining about Muslim gang rapes. Your own house is a total pile of shit, so I guess you need to point fingers elsewhere.

@BizSuitStacy I believe in free trade, as this promotes prosperity and peaceful cooperation between nations. I oppose protectionist tariffs in any form, irrespective of who levies them. It is a tragic waste of economic potential and political goodwill.

I am well aware of history. The repeal of the Corn Laws in Britain in 1846 (tariffs on imported foods and cereal grains) brought an end to 32 years of artificially inflated food prices that benefited farmers at the expense of the rest of the population. By opening up markets we alleviated famine in Ireland, transferred wealth from the richest 10% of the population to the poorest 90% (I understand this point may be distressing to conservatives), and paved the way for 60 years of unprecedented prosperity.

Just wait until April when we have reciprocal tariffs. Canada has been sticking it to us for years. That is about to end.
SunshineGirl · 36-40, F
@TexChik Well dare I say, Canada was not a terribly good market to target in order to redress the trade imbalance.

Trump signed the same trade agreement with Mecico and Canada that he is now decrying as creating "unfair" conditions 🤔 And the fact that he has issued exemptions from his own punitive tariffs on about half of all imports from Mexico and a third from Canada, suggests that he has been bought and bribed.
TexChik · F
@SunshineGirl Well I guess you will just have to complain to your congressman, won't you?

If you're outraged by 25-30% tariffs on Canadian goods...

then you should be homicidal over Canadian tariffs on US goods that have been in effect for years....

MrGrumpy · M
@wildbill83 So nobody’s buying fentanyl story?
nudistsueaz · 61-69, F
@wildbill83 Exactly
SunshineGirl · 36-40, F
@wildbill83 I oppose all protectionist tariffs. They restrict the free movement of goods, interfere in enterprise, and the cost is invariably borne by workers and consumers rather than the politicians who think they know best.

I am moving my USA stocks to Europe this week. https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2025-03-09/us-markets-are-trailing-the-world-as-aura-of-america-first-fades/

@NewWorldToronto Regardless diminish the risks over the all continents
Heartlander · 80-89, M
@NewWorldToronto Hmmm. ... Sounds like a move that you will one day regret.

One attribute about the US that everyone seems to forget is how fast it can turn itself around, how lemons can be used to make lemonade.

For now though, thanks for the help in driving the price down. Rember, it's buy low and sell high.
you get what you voted for!!!
It is now poised to drop an equal amount. This surge was ONLY because businesses knew tariffs were coming and to hold prices down for their consumers they pre-bought goods to warehouse at lower prices.
SunshineGirl · 36-40, F
@anythingoes477 The deficit will only fall if US exports remain at current levels . . good luck with that!
nudistsueaz · 61-69, F
Just proves how badly the Tariffs were needed.
specman · 51-55, MVIP
January? Trump wasn’t even in office for almost the majority of January! The increase is on Biden!

@specman Actually it takes around 10 years to recover or make profit again. Same all over the world.
@specman nice try. He can’t use that tire old excuse anymore. Everything that happens now, is entirely on Trump.
ninalanyon · 61-69, T
So the question is: is this the intended effect of the threat? After all it can hardly be a surprise that companies would try to buy in what they need before the tariffs take effect (if they ever do).

Or to put it another way: cui bono?
SunshineGirl · 36-40, F
@ninalanyon No one will gain from this chaos, I fear.
Thoughts and prayers! Is anyone really surprised? This is an example of “fuck around, and find out”.
