[Politics] Stephen Colbert’s ‘Late Show’ canceled by CBS, ends May 2026.

CBS is axing “The Late Show With Stephen Colbert” in May 2026, the host told an audience at a taping Thursday.

The announcement came three days after Colbert spoke out against Paramount Global, parent company of CBS, settling with President Donald Trump over a “60 Minutes” story.

Colbert told the audience that he had learned the night before that “Next year will be our last season. The network will be ending the Late Show in May.”

The audience responded with boos and groans and Colbert said, “Yeah, I share your feelings.”

In his monologue on Monday night, he said he was “offended” by the $16 million settlement reached by Paramount, whose pending sale to Skydance Media needs the Trump administration’s approval.

“I don’t know if anything — anything — will repair my trust in this company,” Colbert said. “But, just taking a stab at it, I’d say $16 million would help.”

He said the technical name in legal circles for the deal was “big fat bribe.”

Paramount and CBS executives said in a statement the cancellation “is purely a financial decision against a challenging backdrop in late night. It is not related in any way to the show’s performance, content or other matters happening at Paramount.”

I put this in politics for a reason. This cancelation I see as purely political. And due to a political buy-out.

Sad to say that I saw this coming. 😔

I saw the show intro in question. I suspect it wont take long for Colbert to find a new home, if he wants one..But thinking ahead, maybe Canada of mexico might be a better fit..😷
DeWayfarer · 61-69, M
@whowasthatmaskedman neither Canada nor Mexico have the audience within the USA. Colbert most certainly isn't going out of the USA anyway. That would limit his audience.

Remember the USA is the third largest population in the world.
whowasthatmaskedman · 70-79, M
@DeWayfarer What I am saying is a show broadcast from Canada or Mexico could easily be syindicated globally just as they are now through streaming services..And earn bigly for the host network..The US market is 5% of the global population..😷
DeWayfarer · 61-69, M
@whowasthatmaskedman I will say again. Colbert will never ever go out of the USA.

He has said as much before.

is "she" still here? usually a blank profile image means they are no longer on SW, or they blocked you, or you blocked them. I reported her, and can no longer see her comments.
DeWayfarer · 61-69, M
@samueltyler2 oh reporting sometimes causes Autoblocks. So yes you may be blocked. I'm not though.
samueltyler2 · 80-89, M
@DeWayfarer is she still spounting crazy stuff?
DeWayfarer · 61-69, M
@samueltyler2 not yet. Probably asleep or something.
I don't want to say Marx was right again, but Marx was right.
whowasthatmaskedman · 70-79, M
@BohemianBabe No. Marx was wrong.. Great theory.. Until you add people to the mix...Then it all falls over..Because people are human and flawed.. (Some more than others)😷
@whowasthatmaskedman Marx was wrong that Communism could work. However, Marx said that the forces of Capital (rich people) always consolidate around what we would today call "Authoritarianism."

That's what we're seeing now. Billionaires consolidated to get Trump elected, knowing that the people controlling him would make the billionaires even richer. Now every company that wants to keep making money is falling in line.
whowasthatmaskedman · 70-79, M
@BohemianBabe That part I accept, because it aligns with the natural insecurity and greed of people..😷
Sandra72 · 51-55, F
Late night tv used to be funny, now it's a political mouth piece. People watch those shows to escape reality and have a laugh, not to listen to political opinion pieces
whowasthatmaskedman · 70-79, M
@Sandra72 Streaming services are global, which is kind of my point. I see Colbert in Oz and John Oliver. So his show not originating in America is no big deal..His cutting comment of the current administraion (and remember he did used to take off Biden too) will travel globally and back into America..😷
DeWayfarer · 61-69, M
@whowasthatmaskedman please look at her pfp Icon. It's blanked by the system for a reason.
whowasthatmaskedman · 70-79, M
@DeWayfarer I realize. But the words deserve to be addressed, in case others attach credibility..😷
Thevy29 · 41-45, M
Freedom of speech is an endangered species
whowasthatmaskedman · 70-79, M
@samueltyler2 Again, sadly I agree.. Trump is only a figurehead for those people backing him this time.. And onjce he is gone enough damage may have been done to the American system that Democracy wont be enough to prevail. Rigged courts, stifled Media and enough poverty to keep people wary of strangers..😷
samueltyler2 · 80-89, M
@whowasthatmaskedman it is frightening though how much we are sounding like the MAGAs when we talk about rigged courts and elections!
whowasthatmaskedman · 70-79, M
@samueltyler2 Just look at how the senate is ramming through controversial new Judge appointments..😷
samueltyler2 · 80-89, M
It smells! Maybe it was part of the settlement? He has always been a never Trumpet.
DeWayfarer · 61-69, M
@samueltyler2 Trump has been complaining about the media for long before the election. This is apart of that plan.
samueltyler2 · 80-89, M
@DeWayfarer his "growth" continues to parallel, that German leader in 1930

The USA doesn't have public funding. You see only commercial products. You do not need socialism.
And that's going to end itself.
DeWayfarer · 61-69, M
@Roundandroundwego guy, look at who you are talking to before you call anyone "murkans"!
@DeWayfarer it's all about you. No USA TV, nothing political. You should have posted it in the "you" category, not politics, news.
DeWayfarer · 61-69, M
@Roundandroundwego you have developed quite a world reputation yourself just by looking on this comment of yours.
Colbert used to be funny. But that was many years ago.
@MayorOfCrushtown Humor is subjective, so it's fine if you don't find him funny. But the fact that the government is deplatforming people who criticize Republicans, that's something that should terrify every freedom-loving American.
Ooh that orange man bads in for a monologue now… 🍿
DeWayfarer · 61-69, M
@TheOneyouwerewarnedabout Sarcasm in this case is acceptable. Because you should know Colbert will not go without a fight. He has been very consistent on this issue.
justanothername · 51-55, M
Clearly no one at Paramount Studious has any balls or backbone.
DeWayfarer · 61-69, M
@justanothername paramount is selling to sky media. Sky media is independent politically. They are the ones without the cajones!
justanothername · 51-55, M
@DeWayfarer I guess you have to go where the money is. The media landscape is a very fast changing environment with the advent of streaming internet and Big tech Billions.
