CBS is axing “The Late Show With Stephen Colbert” in May 2026, the host told an audience at a taping Thursday.

The announcement came three days after Colbert spoke out against Paramount Global, parent company of CBS, settling with President Donald Trump over a “60 Minutes” story.

Colbert told the audience that he had learned the night before that “Next year will be our last season. The network will be ending the Late Show in May.”

The audience responded with boos and groans and Colbert said, “Yeah, I share your feelings.”

In his monologue on Monday night, he said he was “offended” by the $16 million settlement reached by Paramount, whose pending sale to Skydance Media needs the Trump administration’s approval.

“I don’t know if anything — anything — will repair my trust in this company,” Colbert said. “But, just taking a stab at it, I’d say $16 million would help.”

He said the technical name in legal circles for the deal was “big fat bribe.”

Paramount and CBS executives said in a statement the cancellation “is purely a financial decision against a challenging backdrop in late night. It is not related in any way to the show’s performance, content or other matters happening at Paramount.”

I put this in politics for a reason. This cancelation I see as purely political. And due to a political buy-out.

Sad to say that I saw this coming. 😔

Freedom of speech is an endangered species

@Thevy29 Clearly Freedom of speech costs money in America. And less and less people have that kind of money..😷

@whowasthatmaskedman when one participant has very deep pockets, as in the US Treasury, and the SCOTUS gave them the get out of jail card, it is difficult to take a stance.

@samueltyler2 I agree. So your options are shut up and bow before the Messiah, or get the hell out of Dodge. A move I have been advocating for some time. I see several paths this can go and none of them end well for most Americans..😷

@whowasthatmaskedman i am old enough to have gone through other periods of risk, the early 1950s and the red baiting and McCarthyism was really frightening, even to this young person. The difference then is that i had enough years ahead of me to get through the periods. I am not sure i have enough years left to see Trump and his minions gone!

@samueltyler2 Again, sadly I agree.. Trump is only a figurehead for those people backing him this time.. And onjce he is gone enough damage may have been done to the American system that Democracy wont be enough to prevail. Rigged courts, stifled Media and enough poverty to keep people wary of strangers..😷

@whowasthatmaskedman it is frightening though how much we are sounding like the MAGAs when we talk about rigged courts and elections!
