CBS is axing “The Late Show With Stephen Colbert” in May 2026, the host told an audience at a taping Thursday.

The announcement came three days after Colbert spoke out against Paramount Global, parent company of CBS, settling with President Donald Trump over a “60 Minutes” story.

Colbert told the audience that he had learned the night before that “Next year will be our last season. The network will be ending the Late Show in May.”

The audience responded with boos and groans and Colbert said, “Yeah, I share your feelings.”

In his monologue on Monday night, he said he was “offended” by the $16 million settlement reached by Paramount, whose pending sale to Skydance Media needs the Trump administration’s approval.

“I don’t know if anything — anything — will repair my trust in this company,” Colbert said. “But, just taking a stab at it, I’d say $16 million would help.”

He said the technical name in legal circles for the deal was “big fat bribe.”

Paramount and CBS executives said in a statement the cancellation “is purely a financial decision against a challenging backdrop in late night. It is not related in any way to the show’s performance, content or other matters happening at Paramount.”

I put this in politics for a reason. This cancelation I see as purely political. And due to a political buy-out.

Sad to say that I saw this coming. 😔

I saw the show intro in question. I suspect it wont take long for Colbert to find a new home, if he wants one..But thinking ahead, maybe Canada of mexico might be a better fit..😷

@whowasthatmaskedman Not good timing really. ABC and NBC are the only really good options. And they have contracts to fulfill.

Perhaps the CW channel yet it's not a popular station.

@DeWayfarer Its not like US Media is flavour of the month any place else..The thing that is starting to sink into US international businesses now is that the US domestic market isnt everything. And if extortion like this is happening, then the fact that comedy like that of John Oliver, Stephen Colbert and John Daily is actually the best local source of genuine critique. And Trump and his people will trample the constitution and Bill of rights to silence it..Broadcasting from outside the nation is the easy way around that and people like Colbert have the money and the chops to do it..😷

@whowasthatmaskedman neither Canada nor Mexico have the audience within the USA. Colbert most certainly isn't going out of the USA anyway. That would limit his audience.

Remember the USA is the third largest population in the world.

@DeWayfarer What I am saying is a show broadcast from Canada or Mexico could easily be syindicated globally just as they are now through streaming services..And earn bigly for the host network..The US market is 5% of the global population..😷

@whowasthatmaskedman I will say again. Colbert will never ever go out of the USA.

He has said as much before.
