[Politics] Stephen Colbert’s ‘Late Show’ canceled by CBS, ends May 2026.

CBS is axing “The Late Show With Stephen Colbert” in May 2026, the host told an audience at a taping Thursday.

The announcement came three days after Colbert spoke out against Paramount Global, parent company of CBS, settling with President Donald Trump over a “60 Minutes” story.

Colbert told the audience that he had learned the night before that “Next year will be our last season. The network will be ending the Late Show in May.”

The audience responded with boos and groans and Colbert said, “Yeah, I share your feelings.”

In his monologue on Monday night, he said he was “offended” by the $16 million settlement reached by Paramount, whose pending sale to Skydance Media needs the Trump administration’s approval.

“I don’t know if anything — anything — will repair my trust in this company,” Colbert said. “But, just taking a stab at it, I’d say $16 million would help.”

He said the technical name in legal circles for the deal was “big fat bribe.”

Paramount and CBS executives said in a statement the cancellation “is purely a financial decision against a challenging backdrop in late night. It is not related in any way to the show’s performance, content or other matters happening at Paramount.”

I put this in politics for a reason. This cancelation I see as purely political. And due to a political buy-out.

Sad to say that I saw this coming. 😔

Late night tv used to be funny, now it's a political mouth piece. People watch those shows to escape reality and have a laugh, not to listen to political opinion pieces

@Sandra72 have you watched his show? He does make a comedy about what horrors are happening during every day.

@Sandra72 While I agree with your words, its a shame you dont want to face the reality you voted for..😷

@whowasthatmaskedman im Canadian. I didn’t vote for anyone and I would feel the same way if it were reversed and they were talking about democrats

@Sandra72 Tell it to Johnny Carson and David Letterman. Both were political. And on CBS.
Sandra72 · 51-55, F
@justanothername the way to speak out is news, people want to be entertained not lectured
Sandra72 · 51-55, F
@DeWayfarer David Letterman was never political

@Sandra72 Bull! Colbert understudied under Letterman.
Sandra72 · 51-55, F
@DeWayfarer I watched Letterman through the 80s and 90s and early 2000s and it was never this bad. Colbert and Kimmel have to remember that half the country voted for Trump, and when people tune into your show and hear them slandering them for voting for him theyre not gonna watch. Unfortunately that diminishes your ratings and you become unprofitable
DeWayfarer · 61-69, M
@Sandra72 Listen my father wouldn't listen to either Carson nor Letterman if they were not political. My father passed away in 91.
Sandra72 · 51-55, F
@DeWayfarer I may remember it differently and I wasn't an avid watcher. I was young in the 80s and had no interest in the early 2000s.
samueltyler2 · 80-89, M
@Sandra72 they use humor not slander. Please remember that there was no majority voting for trump.
Sandra72 · 51-55, F
@samueltyler2 it absolutely was a majority. He won the popular vote, the house and the senate. People want to be entertained not lectured
Sandra72 · 51-55, F
@samueltyler2 and it is slander. CBS just paid a 16 million dollar lawsuit
samueltyler2 · 80-89, M
@Sandra72 CBS was bullied into the settlement. They settled for pennies on the dollar. They did not slander, they were sued for editing an interview. If i could get a couple of hundreds for each time I was interview, turn the producer says, stop making.
DeWayfarer · 61-69, M
@Sandra72 Paramount never apologized! They are money grabbers and why they sold out to a politically independent station like sky media!
Sandra72 · 51-55, F
@DeWayfarer whatever the case may be. Late night talk shows have lost a lot of ratings and it's only a matter of time before they're all canceled. Honestly, how many people are still watching cable anymore?
DeWayfarer · 61-69, M
@Sandra72 Listen, I'm still on antenna TV! 😂
Sandra72 · 51-55, F
DeWayfarer · 61-69, M
@Sandra72 I'm laughing right back at you. You are the one wasting money on endless commercials! 😂
Sandra72 · 51-55, F
@DeWayfarer I don't have cable. I hardly watch tv at all. I love to read and write

@Sandra72 so you are not living in the US. Collbert's show is on CBS, a legacy broadcast channel!
Sandra72 · 51-55, F
@samueltyler2 I know who broadcasts his show. His cancelation has been all over. I don’t need to live in the US. We get the same feed in Canada
