After Trump wins, will the Iphone and other American products be made in the USA instead of China?

Trump said that China will pay. He will slap 100% tariff or 200% or whatever it takes till everything is made in the USA by American workers.
No, we just won't have any cell phones except the Librum, which is a Linux-based phone and the only one made in the US. People who really want iPhones or Samsung will pay the tariffs. If you think inflation is bad now, wait until there's a tariff on everything made overseas.

Just curious, we're at nearly full employment now. If he uses the Army to round up all of the illegal immigrants and deports them, where are we supposed to get the workers to fill their jobs, not to mention the new ones in manufacturing that he thinks tariffs will create?
@Dshhh The Librem is a niche product as it's not compatible with Android or iOS apps. It runs Linux apps same as a Linux desktop, and in fact can function as a desktop if you attach an external monitor, keyboard, and mouse. It's main selling points are modularity (components can be swapped out) and extreme privacy (it has kill switches that cut power to the camera, microphone, Bluetooth, etc.). The drawback is that since everything is on a separate chip, the circuit board is larger and more power-intensive.

@LeopoldBloom The ONLY thing that causes INFLATION is too many dollars chasing too many goods. The Bidenflation was caused by those TRILLIONS OF STIMULUS DOLLARS he flooded our economy with.

A Tariff is not an instrument of inflation. It has NOTHING to do with the money supply.
@Reason10 You're forgetting the disruptions to the supply chain caused by COVID. Inflation was worldwide, not just in the US. The Trump stimulus dollars also had an effect.

Tariffs are passed on to the consumer, so they result in higher prices even if it's not strictly "inflation" by your definition. Unless you think the corporations will just eat the tariffs and settle for lower profits.

So you have no problem with SLAVERY?

https://www.businessinsider.com/apple-forced-uighur-labor-iphone-factory-2020-3

Apple's suppliers in China use thousands of displaced Uighurs for labour, according to a new report from the Australian Strategic Policy Institute.

The report is wide-ranging and focuses on a coordinated government campaign to move and displace Uighurs, a Muslim minority found mostly in Xinjiang province. The report estimates that between 2017 and 2019 some 80,000 Uighurs were forcibly transferred to work in factories across China.
The relocation programme is part of the Chinese government's broader persecution of the Uighur minority, which is predominantly Muslim. Over 1 million Uighur people in Xinjiang have been imprisoned in detention camps, and the government has launched a program paying Chinese men to sleep with Uighur women which was described as "mass rape" by one Uighur activist.

Although the report highlights that the displaced Uighur workers are present in many different companies' supply chains including Nike, BMW, and Amazon, Apple features prominently as a case study.

ASPI found evidence of forced Uighur labor at four separate factories in Apple's supply chain including the Foxconn Zhengzhou facility — a massive factory known colloquially as "iPhone City" that employs up to 350,000 people and produces over half of the world's iPhones. Totalling the figures from ASPI's report, at least 2,700 Uighur people have been transferred into Apple's supply chain since 2017.

Do you think a country that competes with the United States by using SLAVE LABOR should be allowed to get away with it?
@Reason10
Nobody suggested that China would be paying the tariffs.

😝😝😝😝😝😝😝😝😝😝😝😝😝😝😝😝😝

Trump, your cult-leader, thinks that's how tariffs work.

@sree251 Part of the USA's problem is because it positions itself as 'boss of all bosses' (to quote Alex of Northridge Fix) in the world, it has the highest military spending of almost all other nations bar this week's flavour of Russia/USSR combined. How can that work? Easy if nearly all the industrial production is offshored to another country where labour is cheap.
He doesn't know how tariffs work.

@BohemianBabe you’re top notch dude ! Respect .
@AthrillatheHunt I'm literally the best person here.

@BohemianBabe top 5 for sure. Haha

If he achieves this and expels 11 million immigrants, the cost of producing this all-American phone will be so high that no one will be able to afford to buy it without goernment subsidy.

What do those illegal alien animals have to do with the cost of an Iphone? If President Trump expels them, he will have saved America TRILLIONS OF DOLLARS in welfare payments.

Those animals didn't swim the Rio Grande just to get a job.

An iphone 16 if made in the usa would cost around 3000 dollars if made by properly paid us workers in a proper factory with proper manufacturing and labour practises. Tim Cook would have no job as apple would cease to exist.

Just like here in Australia consumers have got used to cheap imported goods made where quality doesn't matter and human rights no longer apply.

@zonavar68 A mere 3000 dollars? It's a box of magic you can carry around in your pocket!

Frankly they should cost a lot more. It's not as though they're actually essential to life, we're just told having a phone is. (Yes I'm a hypocrite :P )
zonavar68 · 56-60, M
@Lhayezee Well when you can't get fixed line phones anymore (as in the case here where NBN replaced nearly all fixed-line phone services in Australia except rural areas) a mobile phone is the only way to make/receive calls/messages, etc. But I own a Sonim phone. US brand, but again made in China like all other phones.
The man is wearing a Chinese Tie. How gullible can you get?
Reason10 · 70-79, M
@Pitchblue So you only have a problem with SLAVE LABOR if Trump buys products made by SLAVES? You have no problem with Iphones made by slaves, huh?
Reason10 · 70-79, M
@Pitchblue I remember when Trump first ran for president. Some department stores protested his getting into the race by refusing to carry his line of men's ties. He waved it off, saying that hell, he got those ties from China anyway.

Yes we have enshrined modern slavery which most people would claim doesn't exist. Yet it does in nearly every impoverished country where there is a clear ruling elite with all the money, and no middle class just a very poor lower class. China, India, Pakistan, many african countries where EV makers get raw materials for the batteries, etc.

Tariffs are trade barriers that raise prices, reduce available quantities of goods and services for US businesses and consumers
That equates to higher prices. Many products are only produced foreignly. Also america imports lots of raw materials. Goods cost more ppl buy less tarriffs wont help.

Hehhe, someone needs a lesson in economics.
helenS · 36-40, F
The original HP-15C pocket calculator, made in Corvallis, Oregon, sold for $135 in 1982, or closer to around $425 when adjusted for inflation.
A pocket calculator made in China today costs about $10. It's slave work, that's why.
Reason10 · 70-79, M
@helenS Hell, today the packaging for the calculator costs more than the calculator itself. And it's obsolete. A cell phone has a calculator app.
helenS · 36-40, F
@Reason10 Yes it's true, and I have a photo-realistic simulation of Hewlett-Packard's 15c scientific hand-held calculator on my iPhone. But nothing will ever beat the original!
Love it 🥰
whowasthatmaskedman · 70-79, M
No. GM and Ford will move to China. The good news is the quality will improve and the price will drop...😷
whowasthatmaskedman · 70-79, M
@LeopoldBloom And still be cheaper than they are now...😷
sree251 · 41-45, M
@LeopoldBloom
If they move to China, they will become Chinese companies and subject to Trump's tariffs.

What if the Chinese set up companies in the US the way the Japanese did? Will that work?
whowasthatmaskedman · 70-79, M
@sree251 It already does. Just not with China yet. The largest BMW plant in the world is, I believe , in Tennessee. (pardon if I got the state wrong. But its around there)😷
Anniedlr · 26-30, F
And what happens to American Companies trade if China applies identical tariffs on American goods
@Anniedlr Nothing that wouldn't happen in the long run with Xi destroying the Chinese economy.
Dshhh · M
nope he LOVES Xi
but the Iphone is made in about 6 nations,
then assembled in china
Bring manufacturing back to the US
KingofBones1 · 46-50, M
Nope Russia will get the contract
elons teasing his own ph that dont share your data with everyone..

🍿

It doesn't work like that.
AthrillatheHunt · 51-55, M
I don’t think so. Haha

@TrashCat
Yes...as are his ties and other trump paraphanelia. FACTS

He said he would impose tariffs. He didn't say it's a sin to buy stuff made in China.

@sree251 We don't need you to trumpslain.
