The Legislature only is involved in judicial-esque proceedings in impeachment, which this was not. For other criminal matters, the Judicial branch is in charge; the investigation by this special committee referred various matters to the Justice Department for such review.

If there WERE to be criminal trials, they would be conducted along the lines you suggest, with proper legal procedures and advocacy for the accused.

But I don't expect you get the distinction between the branches, the fact that we have granted specific, enumerated powers to the Federal government, etc.

Govenors have the power to pardon people who commit state crimes. Consider the number of Govenors who have been convicted for State crimes. Not one ever pardoned himself although some were pardoned.
