So in the UK we go to the voting stations today to vote in the local elections

Its going to be an interesting time today to see if the Tories implode, Labour have massive gains or do the Liberals, Greens and independents make a surprise and do well.

We all have our own reasons to vote, how we vote, if its by loyalty to one party, to give the party a bloody nose, to vote strategically but please vote, don't give that lame excuse my vote is by not voting that's such a sad thing to do as no doubt you've been moaning about things so don't waste this opportunity to make your voice heard at the polling stations

First time photo ID required, after a trial run in certain areas. Reading up on the trial run, 3,000 were turned away, 1000 of whom never returned to cast their vote. The trial was deemed a "success" (😀) No need for this, only one person convicted of election fraud over the past few years. One can't help thinking that this is a Tory strategy to discourage voting, especially as the older voter can use their Bus Pass as ID but younger people are unable to use either Oyster Cards or Student Cards. Obviously, the older voters are more likely to vote Tory. All rather sad.

The UK is descending into a bit of a Banana Republic. Locally, our buses are totally unreliable, pot holes everywhere, our mail now often just delivered every few days, recycling/rubbish often overflowing before collection, often not possible to see a GP in person, many not able to access a dentist. 3,000,000 food parcels distributed last year compared to about 300,000 just a few years ago. Nurses, teachers, doctors, train drivers all striking on and off for more pay having seen the worth of their wages fall again and again under the Tories - whose hearts are simply not in public services no matter their protestations.

These being local elections, I can understand anyone who votes for a local Tory who they know has provided strong and loyal service to the community during their term in office, but I simply cannot understand the mentality of anyone else still prepared to put a X against a Tory name. They have a become a self-serving shambles unfit for office.
@SW-User most european countries have been doing it for years and it is no hardship
SW-User
@InOtterWords Once again, it is for the UK a totally unnecessary additional requirement. This irrespective of what other countries may or may not do. "Hardship" doesn't really come into it.

@SW-User A gun licence isnt acceptable because "there aren't sufficient checks when it's issued". However, one can obtain a Voter Authority Certificate simply by uploading a selfie - no checks at all.

Another aspect of the ID requirement is that a Govt spokesperson said that one reason for introducing then throughout the UK was to bring Scotland, Wales and England in line with Northern Ireland (where they are already a requirement) Well how about scrapping Prescription Charges in England to bring us in line with the rest of the UK? 😀

Anyway, results not going well for the Tories, and it should be remembered that they started from a low base last time round, when there were many anti-tory votes from Brexit supporters who were protesting against the gridlock in Parliament over the resistance to implementing the EU Referendum result.

I just want them to finnish the flippin Co Op near where I live so it's easier to get beer.
Disposal · 36-40, M
@Matt85 weird. There a co-op being made near me too
SW-User
@Matt85 Hope it gets built soon. Hopefully not the same thing as the 42 hospitals on the way!
Burnley123 · 41-45, M
I've been out canvassing a lot and I leafleted this morning before work. 😇
milkymum1 · 31-35, F
@Burnley123 well done mate, so proud of you

what sort of feedback are you getting
Burnley123 · 41-45, M
@milkymum1 I've deliberately been doing it in a mixed ward. Not a fan of Starmer but I like the local candidate.

I don't understand why the requirement for photo identification would lead to significant numbers not voting. Most people should have this form of identification now, and if they can't or won't use it for voting it's really their own fault
OldBrit · 61-69, M
@SW-User most elderly people don't or many poor people as the two most recognised forms are driving licence or passport. My mother and mother in law both didn't have either for last 20 years of their lives. I didn't have a driving licence a few years ago due to a medical condition, it can be withdrawn at any time if a doctor decided I'm unfit to drive. Due to that condition i don't have a passport as I can't consider travelling either so I've let it lapse. I could easily be one of those with neither.

My issue is there is no requirement by law to have a government issued photo id but you can't vote without it. Simple solution: give everyone a free photo id then no issue. But to impose a requirement for it to vote but not supply it for free is to me discrimination against poor, elderly, disabled etc
OldBrit · 61-69, M
Well first time since my unitary authority came into being that Labour has won overall majority. There's a turn up. Even in the Blair years we had a Labour mp but not the council. The parliamentary constituency changes though make it highly unlikely it'll anything other than a a Tory MP at the next general election.
Strictmichael75 · 61-69, M
@OldBrit Then it’s up to the voters to change that!
Strictmichael75 · 61-69, M
It important to vote yet so many don’t take the time to do it! It’s a civil duty
gol979 · 41-45, M
@milkymum1 are the political class representing you? What policies have they enacted that have benefited you?
milkymum1 · 31-35, F
@gol979 They gave done in the past but since 2010 they haven't

Tbh Greens are probs best imo, labours shite but if it takes voting for em to hurt the Tories then yep.

Even though they're incompetent, cruel, manipulative, divisive and super fucking racist people will still vote for them unfortunately.

The one around my way seems alright as a person but he's a nimbyist about building local housing and we need housing so 🤷 can't have it both ways.
wonkywinky · 51-55, M
@Ryannnnnn Screw you.Im a usual Tory voter.Who are you to cast judgements?Yes i probably believe in things that to snowflakes like you are totally alien.
Like patriotism, belief in monogamy through marriage, there are only two genders.
Yes that makes you terribly racist..Ok,im racist you got me.
Ryannnnnn · 31-35, M
@wonkywinky haha what.
If you can honestly vote for a party who have destroyed the country in 15 years with a cabinet of liars and racists like Braverman then damn. Even old school Tories aren't happy. It's been a disaster.

Secondly, political belief doesn't have a monopoly on concepts like monogomy, I'm far from a "snowflake" brother. You're not racist for voting tory, but you will be keeping racists and incompetents in power. I'm speaking of the cabinet, not yourself as a citizen.

Patriotism becomes blind adherence to bad ideas and people if it's unconditional and being run poorly. I'm not proud of what this countries become. Blind acceptance of low standards cannot be called a virtue.

I couldn't care less about your beliefs on genders or whatever the daily mail "Culture war" narrative claims, if you don't believe in that stuff that's fine my guy.

I've only got one message for potential Tory voters:

Stay at Home!
Save Lives!
Protect The NHS!

As in the trial run, many were turned away at the Polling Stations yesterday. One is one too many.
Dlrannie · 31-35, F
Not all parts of the UK are voting today 😂😂
Lhayezee · 26-30, F
There aren't elections this year where I live so I'm just enjoying the ONE day of the year when I can put the radio on and there's no pointless political gossiping, because it's banned on election day. I think we should have one day like this a week!
nacnud · 31-35, M
My area doesn't have elections this time. The area lost a Conservative majority on the council last year.
milkymum1 · 31-35, F
@nacnud ok and what do you think or would like the result to be
nacnud · 31-35, M
@milkymum1 mine went to independent control but usually switches between Conservative and Labour. It did need to change from Conservative as it wasn't well run.
wonkywinky · 51-55, M
I think the turnout will be the lowest ever because many people dont have photo id,or will refuse to have to use it.
MartinII · 70-79, M
There are only elections in parts of the country - none in London where I live, for example. Interesting that ID is now required.
Barny52 · 56-60, M
Bet this will be lowest turnout in history with needing photo ID
There were no elections in Wales....
MartinII · 70-79, M
@TheSirfurryanimalWales Nor in London.
VisionQuest · 51-55, M
How did the elections go, did one party dominate?
