So in the UK we go to the voting stations today to vote in the local elections

Its going to be an interesting time today to see if the Tories implode, Labour have massive gains or do the Liberals, Greens and independents make a surprise and do well.

We all have our own reasons to vote, how we vote, if its by loyalty to one party, to give the party a bloody nose, to vote strategically but please vote, don't give that lame excuse my vote is by not voting that's such a sad thing to do as no doubt you've been moaning about things so don't waste this opportunity to make your voice heard at the polling stations

First time photo ID required, after a trial run in certain areas. Reading up on the trial run, 3,000 were turned away, 1000 of whom never returned to cast their vote. The trial was deemed a "success" (馃榾) No need for this, only one person convicted of election fraud over the past few years. One can't help thinking that this is a Tory strategy to discourage voting, especially as the older voter can use their Bus Pass as ID but younger people are unable to use either Oyster Cards or Student Cards. Obviously, the older voters are more likely to vote Tory. All rather sad.

The UK is descending into a bit of a Banana Republic. Locally, our buses are totally unreliable, pot holes everywhere, our mail now often just delivered every few days, recycling/rubbish often overflowing before collection, often not possible to see a GP in person, many not able to access a dentist. 3,000,000 food parcels distributed last year compared to about 300,000 just a few years ago. Nurses, teachers, doctors, train drivers all striking on and off for more pay having seen the worth of their wages fall again and again under the Tories - whose hearts are simply not in public services no matter their protestations.

These being local elections, I can understand anyone who votes for a local Tory who they know has provided strong and loyal service to the community during their term in office, but I simply cannot understand the mentality of anyone else still prepared to put a X against a Tory name. They have a become a self-serving shambles unfit for office.

@SW-User Yeah, regarding potholes we now drive on the "what's left" of the road rather than "the left"

@SW-User I agree in a way,the country is going to the dogs, but thats due to weak Govt,i doubt any other party will do better because theres little difference between the "main" parties. We need a totally new direction.
SW-User
@wonkywinky I'm all for new directions, but at any moment in time we are faced with particular choices. As I see it we put our cross against the candidate/s we consider the best of the bunch, not the ideal.

@SW-User The only way to see positive change for our country is if we stop indirect taxation and those who can afford to pay more, do so. We need to provide better services for the public and give a proper wage to people like nurses who frankly have been crapped on by this Tory government.

@MarmeeMarch Relative to how voting was, it is a discouragement. If, as has been the case in the past, you simply have to register and a polling card is automatically sent for each election, the process is simple. It has resulted in virtually no fraud, only one person being convicted since 2019. In such a context, the demand for photo ID is a discouragement in as much as it is requiring further procedures and actions from anyone seeking to vote.

Again, as I mentioned previously, having different criteria for what counts as a valid ID, criteria that actually favours (demographically) the Party imposing the requirements, suggests - at least to me - that it is (as Baldrick in Blackadder would say) "a cunning plan" to maximise their vote relative to the other Parties.

You don't know what a Tory is? Lucky lad!

@MarmeeMarch You still have to follow the other procedures. Photo ID is an additional requirement.

@MarmeeMarch Keep changing the point you continually fail to make, why don't you. Continually fail to address the points being made in my own posts, why don't you.

Are you a troll?

@MarmeeMarch That is another question. Start a thread.

@MarmeeMarch Whether or not I wish to admit anything is really beside the point. As far as the UK is concerned the idea of every citizen having an ID card has been suggested in the past and has been resisted for various reasons. If interested you could Google "Arguments against National ID Cards" and you will get a few hits.

As suggested previously, start a thread on this.

@MarmeeMarch As I said, start a thread elsewhere.

(No, you are not simply responding. You have hijacked a thread on a completely different subject)

I won't bother responding again.

@SW-User i think photo id is a good thing. Almost everyone over the age of 18 has a drivers licence or passport and everyone has had pkenty of time

@wonkywinky Problem is we chose a new direction and its gotten worse and all the tories can do is ignore it complelty and blame a party that hasn't been in government for over 13 years
milkymum131-35, F
@MarmeeMarch Hi where are you from?
milkymum131-35, F
@MarmeeMarch The problem with the ID card is there's hardly been any reported ID fraud in any election, quiet a few people don't have ID and the government only allowed certain ID like Passport, Driving Licence, Oyster Card which is a travel card but all travel cards with a photo ID for over 60s, Proof of age card, and any Government issued ID

Any other form of ID wouldn't be allowed but the ID that was allowed didn't matter if it was out of date !!!

@MarmeeMarch The thing is we hardly have any voting fraud if anything we have MORE voting fraud from psotal votes........ yes postal votes
milkymum131-35, F
@InOtterWords the thing is many don't and only certain ID is valid and doesn't matter if its out of date !!!
milkymum131-35, F
@SW-User You know when the tory Government brand anything a " success" then its a lie

Only certain ID cards were allowed and of course out of ALL the travel cards ONLY over 60s were allowed, I wonder why....

Sadly this is what people voted for the last few times they knew what the Tories were like and still voted that way

It doesn't help we don't have any free press as most are owned by Tory doners, they scarmounger so people vote the way they have done

Locally and Nationally raods have been bad for decades and will never be sorted as its the quick fiw and the pot hole comes back again if its ever done in the first place

as for Rubbish/ recycling its in many places 2 weeks for a collection

GPs, well all the NHS is understaffed, under paid, are completely under valued but apparently standing outside clapping makes up for it !!!!!!!

The Tories have neevr ever been interested in Public services, well only to sell them off

Sadly until we change are voting system we'll always have these safe seats which is absolutely crazy in this day and age
