@Coffeequilt Leopold is wrong almost universally. But it is his underestimation of Ronald Dion Desantis which will turn out to be his biggest error, as it was Charlie Crist's and also Bob Chapek's.

DeSatan won't be the only one running besides Traitor Tot. But the battle between those idiots will be a sight to see.

@Subsumedpat That's what the Republicans did with Trump in 2020, but he was the sitting president and the putative nominee. He won't have that kind of power in 2024. There's going to be a primary and his only chance is if the non-Trump vote is split again like it was in 2016.

@LeopoldBloom I understand that, but there has been talk by people in the republicans party ready for it to be the post trump era, use the same power to appoint a nominee in 2024 so as not to have a primary for Trump to win. I don't think they will do it, too unfair to the other potential candidates but would be a way to rid the party of Trumps influence.

@Subsumedpat The problem with that is that none of the contenders right now - DeSantis, Pence, Pompeo, Hawley, etc. has that kind of pull with the national party. Enough Republican voters want someone other than Trump to be the nominee, that if the party bigwigs tried that, they'd risk alienating too many of them, and would give Trump an excuse to run as an independent, if for no other reason than to prevent the Republican from winning.

The best scenario would be if Jack Smith's investigation leads to an indictment.

@BohemianBabe imo it's a toss up. Trump may have the Qanon crowd, but DeSantis has normy republicans and the media. Trump has gone from talking about outsourcing to talking about election rigging, and that's a massive weight around his ankles.

@BlueVeins there are a number of die hards and some already switching. I would say if desantis runs as well it is going to get ugly, but Trump is going to make it ugly either way like he did last time. Midterms have shown he's a liability in the general but still important in primaries. Rational Republicans are trying to dump him now, but if he wins primaries they will circle the wagons again I do not doubt. Trump's chances at the general really depends on how much blame Biden takes for the downturn even though people have been predicting it since 2019.

I remember during the highpoint of the Alt-Right, Mike Enoch said that the goal is to no longer need the term "Alt-Right" because they want the Alt-Right to just be the Right.
I would argue this is what happened with Trumpism. The trumpian Republicans have become the norm. The type of Republicans that we would have called "normie" five years ago are now a small minority.

As for the media, we'll see. I think Fox is going to walk a fine line between promoting DeSantis and trying not to offend Trump. But stations like Newsmax and OAN, I think are going to back Trump.
