If the UK had had Fox News for the past 25 yrs , would British people be just as stupid ?

Roadsterrider · 56-60, M
When I first started getting into politics, my brother who was 20 years older than me, read two newspapers, and I questioned why. The city we lived in had a paper called the Star and a paper called the Exponent. He had me read an article from the Star, and then an article on the same subject from the Exponent. One was a liberal slant and the other was the conservative slant of the same issue. He told me, "No matter where you get your news from, they are lying to you, you have to read and think about both sides of any argument." This was around 1973 or 1974. In my opinion the truthfulness of media outlets has diminished since I asked that question so many years ago.
hippyjoe1955 · 61-69, M
@Roadsterrider And the fact is that the totalitarians in our midst need to be removed from power permanently and no I am not talking about the elected clowns. I am talking about the permanent government who suffer delusions of grandeur.
Roadsterrider · 56-60, M
@hippyjoe1955 I can agree with that, give them all the bum's rush and start over. Including the elected clowns, anyone who has served two terms should be removed.
hippyjoe1955 · 61-69, M
@Roadsterrider You can tell when a politician has been controlled by the unelected officials. They start to use the word 'WE" in place of the word "I".
BittersweetPotato · 31-35, F
I think at the end of the day it depends on the audience and recipient. Just because I read something, doesn't mean I will believe it. Sometimes I like to read the news on the other side, just to know how they think. It doesn't make me one of them.
Elessar · 26-30, M
Idk about the UK but down here it's called "Mediaset".

And the answer is yes
RodionRomanovitch · 56-60, M
@Elessar I think you're Italian , if I'm not mistaken. Here in France we have a similar thing in CNews. It's now the second most popular news channel in the country and is fast going down the Fox path.

The answer is probably yes too. In as much as the type of people who choose to watch this type of broadcasting are the most receptive to its shock tactics and conspiracy theory type nonsense.
SW-User
@RodionRomanovitch how likely is France to turn fascist (compared to the rise of Meloni in Italy)? Is it less likely than Italy (perhaps owing to the way World War 2 ended in Italy)? Or does history from 70 years ago make little difference, and it could just as easily happen in France now too (e.g., La Pen)?
RodionRomanovitch · 56-60, M
@SW-User Le Pen's share of the vote has doubled in the last ten years. With an ongoing economic crisis and worries about immigration , there is every chance her party will contest the next run-off. Could she win ? It's not out of the question , but I'd like to think that her support has plateaued now , or at the least she could never convince half of French voters to support her agenda.
Carazaa · F
Fox news is not a news program but a political activism advertisement.
hippyjoe1955 · 61-69, M
@Carazaa You are following the spirit of this world. Do try to open your eyes. Your posts are proof of nothing since you have bought the lie. You can't mix the truth and a lie and expect it to remain true. It just became a lie! The minute you worship the state as you do you no longer are following Jesus. The minute you advocate the killing of innocent human beings you are no longer following Jesus. The minute you start accusing without evidence of someone else being evil you are no longer following Jesus. You have the spirit of this world flowing through your veins and are too vain to realize it. So very very sad.
Carazaa · F
@hippyjoe1955 [big]Don't be a fascist![/big]
hippyjoe1955 · 61-69, M
@Carazaa [big]The only fascist on this post is YOU[/big] You are the one advocating the worship of the state. You are the one advocating killing of innocent humans. You are the one making dehumanizing comments about your political foes. That dear is [big]FASCISM[/big].
SunshineGirl · 36-40, F
One media outlet does not make people stupid. In a healthy democracy people should be free to seek news fromwhere they wish . . and hopefully to come to the conclusion that Fox News and the Daily Mail are entertainment products that rarely aspire to objective, impartial journalism.
Burnley123 · 41-45, M
@SunshineGirl 'Hopefully,' does a lot of heavy lifting.
Abstraction · 61-69, M
UK has had Murdoch media for long enough to be stupid enough to support Brexit and consistently vote in a government that mismanages and hands over assets to the wealthy by the truckload.
@RodionRomanovitch yeah...we have a devolved parliament which has certain powers........but we are not independent.
And are heavily dependent on Westminster.
RodionRomanovitch · 56-60, M
@TheSirfurryanimalWales I know ...... (I'm Welsh 😉 )
Abstraction · 61-69, M
@RodionRomanovitch I haven't forgotten he supported Blair - it's whoever suits his agenda in Australia as well. Goodness, it's a Welsh thread - I'm descended from a guy who left Ffestiniog long ago for the colonies at 19 because the slate mines didn't appeal as a future. He did ok too - successful business, first shire president where he ended up.
I mean they already have Sky News.
RodionRomanovitch · 56-60, M
@PicturesOfABetterTomorrow The Australian accents might be a giveaway.
@RodionRomanovitch Not really. There are Aussie news reporters working all over the world including in Canada. An accent is definitely not enough to make assumptions.
RodionRomanovitch · 56-60, M
ididntknow · 51-55, M
The same goes for CNN, Do you agree ?

RodionRomanovitch · 56-60, M
@ididntknow CNN is obviously left-leaning , but it does not have primetime stars who peddle disinformation and conspiracy theories and are little more than propagandists for the GOP.

Big difference.
ididntknow · 51-55, M
@RodionRomanovitch No, but CNN / MSNBC constantly tell lies, if people can’t see that, well, what can you say
plungesponge · 41-45, M
It's occurred to me before that the existence of Fox News (and the openly liberal networks as well) is an offshoot from the USA's roughly 50/50 split between two major political parties, and also its freedom of press.

That's a rare combination really, it can only happen in a democracy, and even in most democracies the split between parties is either lopsided or divided into more than two major factions. And most countries may have freedom of press but culturally people are more restrained, especially in societies previously dominated by monarchy like the UK.

So I don't think it's so much a case of a population being dumber or smarter as much as it is how over-the-top the partisan media elements are allowed to go without turning off the moderate voters
RodionRomanovitch · 56-60, M
@plungesponge ' as much as it is how over-the-top the partisan media elements are allowed to go '

Doesn't that date back to some (fairly recent)law which relaxed the rules for broadcasters to be given a licence ?
plungesponge · 41-45, M
@RodionRomanovitch Sounds about right, and there's so much big money in politics/media in the US
smiler2012 · 56-60
{@rodionromanovitch] 😆 do you mean would they be brain washed by fox and there political bias . well too be honest the british people can be as feeble minded when they believe some of the political nonsense in some of the tabloids
helenS · 36-40, F
Just as stupid as who, please?
RodionRomanovitch · 56-60, M
@2cool4school I'm too old ...... lol !

You know I'm pretty sure I've had this conversation with you once before. Shall we just call it a day ? Unless of course , you insist on getting the last word in.

@RodionRomanovitch as in 56+ yo is too old to behave like that. Not that you’re archaic or something. Just let it go.
Harrryblue · 51-55, M
Of course they would, they watch a soap that has been running for 60 years and still believe it’s true
Recent events show they are totally brainwashed sheep
2cool4school · 46-50, F
@Harrryblue don’t forget “Aga sagas” which are also hugely popular.
Burnley123 · 41-45, M
You may or may not know this because you live in France now but we now have a channel called GB News that models itself on Fox. It's had a lot of problems and low ratings but it might take off yet.

I think its struggling because the media class exaggerate the cultural conservatism of the UK and also that our print media being so rightwing fills that market anyway.
RodionRomanovitch · 56-60, M
@Northwest Murdoch's News Corporation had it's wings clipped after the phone hacking scandal in the UK. The organisation was broken up and its planned takeover of BSkyB (where any Fox Type news show would have found a home) was scuppered by the government.
Northwest · M
@RodionRomanovitch Thatcher was on board, when he broke up the unions, so he could help finance his media operations in the US.
RodionRomanovitch · 56-60, M
@Northwest We're talking about two different periods.
hippyjoe1955 · 61-69, M
Well Brits have been groomed by the BBC so..... Sadly all media has a bias and an agenda. Singling one out just shows that you are ignorant of your own bias.
SunshineGirl · 36-40, F
@hippyjoe1955 The BBC usually stands accused of snowflake liberalism. The current government of the UK is slightly to the right of Genghis Khan and would happily privatise the corporation if it wasn't so popular. If you read some of the highly critical BBC analysis of the government's financial strategy over the past fortnight you will understand that they have an independent editorial line and are more impartial than most commercial outlets.
RodionRomanovitch · 56-60, M
@SunshineGirl You're wasting your breath , he doesn't understand anything. Least of all how the BBC is financed by government , and governments change. His 'political masters' comment is just another delusion of his.
hippyjoe1955 · 61-69, M
@SunshineGirl Thank you for proving my point. No better example of someone who has been groomed than someone who would say the British tories are to the right of Genghis Khan.
Strictmichael75 · 61-69, M
I call it «Fuck news»
Because «It gives you fuck all news»
RodionRomanovitch · 56-60, M
@Harrryblue You're the one who sounds scared to me.
Strictmichael75 · 61-69, M
@RodionRomanovitch I am not scared, saddened at seeing more and more stupid people!
Harrryblue · 51-55, M
Mate they show uo every day @Strictmichael75
graphite · 61-69, M
Thank You, Lord, for Fox News. All the other networks do nothing but run DNC talking points and kiss Democrat bottom.
graphite · 61-69, M
@Carazaa So we should watch the other, pro-abortion "news" networks?

https://www.cnn.com/specials/us/abortion-reproductive-rights

https://www.msnbc.com/opinion/msnbc-opinion/abortion-rights-are-line-all-not-lost-n1295576

https://www.cnsnews.com/blog/michael-w-chapman/bishop-jackson-anti-god-anti-christian-mindset-permeates-cnn
Carazaa · F
@graphite The news is the news whether you like it or not. News is NOT gossiping about the president! NO! I did not say one negative word about Trump when he was the president and I refuse to be disrespectful to any leader ever. I personally think I do not have any right to tell another woman what to do with her own body. It is her sin between her and God! I believe in freedom of choice!
Kwek00 · 41-45, M
@graphite Maybe you need to figure out the diffrence between news and blog posts and opinion pieces before you mingle in a conversation about how to evaluate news outlets.
Lesulk11234 · 31-35, M
I wish Biden was our priminister things would be soo much better for everyone.
ididntknow · 51-55, M
@Lesulk11234 carry on taking the pills 🤨
Burnley123 · 41-45, M
@Lesulk11234 Mediocre beats abysmal.
We did have Fox news but Sky kicked them off!
walabby · 61-69, M
They would be stupid to even watch such crap!
DownTheStreet · 51-55, M
British women seem to be pretty well dialed in
ididntknow · 51-55, M
The world’s media, owned by six corporations, They must realise how much they can easily manipulate people, or should I say the sheeple ?
ididntknow · 51-55, M
@RodionRomanovitch I’d say that most corporations these days lean to left,
RodionRomanovitch · 56-60, M
@ididntknow I knew you would , and you would be wrong.
ididntknow · 51-55, M
@RodionRomanovitch we can agree to disagree 😋
Fairydust · F
Lol they’d still watch the BBC!!

🤯😑
You mean we're not stupid??? We've had our fair share of fuck ups over recent years, too... Brexit, Covid19 over reaction (no, I'm not a Covid denier - but I accept that some of the measures were unnecessary, like the unused tents), Boris Johnson and Liz Truss...
Burnley123 · 41-45, M
TBH, our print media is much worse than the US version, as I'm sure you know.

If you want to look at how Brexit happened and how Liz Truss is PM, look no further.
RodionRomanovitch · 56-60, M
@Burnley123 Who were the Tory press supporting at the outset of the leadership campaign ?
Burnley123 · 41-45, M
@RodionRomanovitch I don't know tbh because I don't read them. I think Truss.
badminton · 61-69, MVIP
I don't think so. there are cultural-historical differences. Then again they did go for Brexit.
ididntknow · 51-55, M
@badminton Brexit was the best thing ever, I got a 20% pay rise for starters, and why exactly do you need a federal government to run the country’s, The EU are nothing but gangsters, just like the American federal government
2cool4school · 46-50, F
Sky news is pretty much the same thing.
ididntknow · 51-55, M
@2cool4school in Britain we call sky news ( sly news ) but sky news in Britain is owned by MSNBC, so that explains that one
Burnley123 · 41-45, M
@2cool4school Actually no.
2cool4school · 46-50, F
@Burnley123 ok 👍 sure lol
revenant · F
ahahah my ex watches everything on CNN
I watch Fox News on youtube

it is not available in canada
revenant · F
Vous etes en France ? quelle chaine regardez vous ?
RodionRomanovitch · 56-60, M
@revenant TF2 , LCI , France 24
revenant · F
@RodionRomanovitch la television en france est merdique..-🤔
NiftyWhite · 46-50, F
…. As Americans? That’s hard to ever imagine.
They would, and they have.
SW-User
Well they got Brexit with just the Daily Mail and The Sun ... and they're still bending over happily for monarchy ... I dunno how much I Truss them ...
