Do you think there will ever be an American president who is mostly revered by a majority of the citizens in your lifetime?

TinyViolins · 31-35, M
No. We live in an attention economy, where a companies profit is directly tied to how much attention the consumer gives. That's why there's ads everywhere you look.

As a result of this societal feature, the companies that we rely on for information, from our news, to our entertainment, to our social media, they're prioritizing negative information or self-serving biases in order to keep people locked-in to their channel.

Getting people more and more reliant on these outlets to validate their identities often comes at the price of invalidating other people's identities. In the realm of politics, you now have conservatives actively hating liberals and vise versa. More than ever before.

As a result, people are becoming more and more entrenched into their views while being fed nothing but negativity about opposing viewpoints. This fracturing of society is making it seem almost impossible for people to come together in order to agree on anything

@TinyViolins enjoyed reading this

@Mindful It gets way worse. People are being programmed into becoming useful idiots and we don't even realize it. Foreign countries are actively promoting division on social media because they know we'll eat it up. They want a nation divided against itself and so many of us are happily giving it to them
Mindful · 56-60, F
Yes. @TinyViolins hey, off topic, do you play any violins?
Budwick · 70-79, M
Sure - As soon as Trump is reelected.
DallasCowboysFan · 61-69, M
No

Most presidents only have approal ratings barely moving above 50 percent.
And these days, most people are polarized and are not open minded enough to consider policies initiated by the opposing party.

Much of this can be blamed on the MSM.
@thedarkside
Are you sure you want to get in this war? 🤣
Unlikely.
The extreme media focus on the POTUS guarantees that every flaw, foible and error will be almost instantly exposed to billions of people.
It is hard to revere someone who is fallible. Every human makes countless mistakes in a lifetime. Therefore the age of reverence is over.
Heartlander · 80-89, M
Good questions. Unfortunately, the bigger the bigger the institution the more difficult to renew it. If we in America have so much difficulty embracing one another, how can we find the leadership we can all embrace?
@Heartlander JFK & Eisenhower were in your lifetime.
eyeno · M
Yup.....Kennedy,
Honestly? I would not be surprised if the USA stopped existing within my lifetime.
@graphite I see you still don't know what envy means.
@graphite Nobody envies a failing right wing banana republic.

Not with the way we pick our president. It's like we are picking a late night TV comedy host. About which candidate can outwit the other, and who has the best script writers, and which has the benefit of a tailwind generated by the huffing and puffing of the media.

Little of the above is about leadership. There's a big difference between a talk-show host and the network's CEO. But the way we do it we pick a talks show host then expect him/her to run the entire country.

It was the TV media that put JFK in the White House, and it's been that way ever since.
SumKindaMunster · 51-55, M
Doubtful. Certainly not while they are governing. Maybe after, but certainly not during their tenure.
Virgo79 · 61-69, M
Any president for the people will be as good as stoned in politics
Rolexeo · 26-30, M
Not sure if that'd be a good thing
thepreposterouspanda · 36-40, M
Nope. It's too divided at this point.
Driver2 · M
I think so , we need the right leader
JFK and to some extent, Bill Clinton. A surprising number of conservatives I knew thought he was a good president before the Monica incident, and even afterwards, in terms of the economy they couldn’t deny that he helped the country.
Ontheroad · M
@bijouxbroussard Totally agree. JFK was a legend in his own time and remains so.
DallasCowboysFan · 61-69, M
@Ontheroad He won the election over Nixon by one of the closest majorities up to that time. I wonder how different things would have been if Nixon had won. I wonder how he would have treated the Missile Crisis and the escalation in Vietnam.
Ontheroad · M
@DallasCowboysFan If... yeah, I don't much do if's like that. As the old saying goes, "If frogs had wings they wouldn't bump their butts on Lily pads. In any case, JFK handled the missile crisis just fine and the escalation in Vietnam, short of a complete pull out, was inevitable.
fanuc2013 · 51-55, F
Only if God himself comes down from Heaven! And then if he runs on the Republican ticket, the liberals will come up with all kinds of dirt on Him!
TinyViolins · 31-35, M
@fanuc2013 Wait, wait, wait, wait, wait. You really just proposed a scenario where the creator of the entire universe is going to try to compete in an election for US President.

That is the most bonkers thing I've read all day. That's like Superman applying for a job at McDonalds. It's insane

Ramrod · 46-50, M
No,i do not. :(
MasterLee · 56-60, M
4meAndyou · F
Nope. We have a country that has an 11% population of very loud and vocal Marxist agitators, and I very much doubt they, or the media, will allow that.
Dino11 · M
I think so, many lessons being learned from our recent Presidents.
DallasCowboysFan · 61-69, M
@Dino11 @Dino11 The only lessons we can learn from the last 4 presidents and what not to do during your presidency. It wouldn't be hard for anyone to rise above them.
Northwest · M
I don't want to "revere" a President. It's not a personality cult thing.
Yes. It already happened.
