JFK and to some extent, Bill Clinton. A surprising number of conservatives I knew thought he was a good president before the Monica incident, and even afterwards, in terms of the economy they couldn’t deny that he helped the country.

@bijouxbroussard JFK had approval ratings of 85 percent during the Cuban Missile Crisis but a year later when he was assasinated it had dropped to about 55 .

Regardless of the approval rating on paper during his lifetime, and possibly because he was assassinated, JFK and the idea of "Camelot" reached the level of legend in the minds of a majority of people in this country. The question of what might have been will forever remain.

@Ontheroad He won the election over Nixon by one of the closest majorities up to that time. I wonder how different things would have been if Nixon had won. I wonder how he would have treated the Missile Crisis and the escalation in Vietnam.

@DallasCowboysFan If... yeah, I don't much do if's like that. As the old saying goes, "If frogs had wings they wouldn't bump their butts on Lily pads. In any case, JFK handled the missile crisis just fine and the escalation in Vietnam, short of a complete pull out, was inevitable.
