Actually it wasn't under Jimmy Carter. But it was during Nixon's Presidency. Before it happened, I can remember my dad filling the car up with $5.00 or less. When I started driving back 1982, I was buying gas at $0.699 per gallon. Then just after Clinton became President, it broke the $1.259 threshold. And it's been rising ever since.

In Europe in the 1970s we had 3 or 4 day weeks to reduce demand for scarce resources. The EU has asked people who can to work from home for one day a week to reduce petrol consumption.
