Could the U.S.see a return to the odd/even system to but gas?

Though it was way before my time,Ive read that in the 1970s',there was a gasoline shortage crisis under then -President Jimmy Carter. The crisis became so serious that they apparently assigned "odd/even"days where citizens could only purchase gas on the pre-assigned days. Also,I was told that there were lines at gas stations that stretched for several blocks! With the current shortage going on now,is there a possibility that they might return to that practice?

Actually it wasn't under Jimmy Carter. But it was during Nixon's Presidency. Before it happened, I can remember my dad filling the car up with $5.00 or less. When I started driving back 1982, I was buying gas at $0.699 per gallon. Then just after Clinton became President, it broke the $1.259 threshold. And it's been rising ever since.
@dakotaviper If you go back to the mid 60s, we could get almost 4 gallons of gas for a buck. Prices ranged from 25.9 - 32.9 cents a gallon.

@independentone in 1971 the average price was $0.36 per gallon. In 1966, the average price was $0.31 per gallon.

Using the 1971 price of $0.36 per gallon, $5 would be around 14 gallons. Back then, the majority of vehicles made had 12 to 15 gallon tanks.
In 2004, the average price broke the $2 per gallon threshold.

@dakotaviper when I started driving in 1971 gas at my Cali home was 28.9/29.9 / gal. Rarely 27.9. There were always has wars which kept the price low. I never paid 30.9/ gallon
