Line 5 has had 33 leaks since 1968, spilling over one million gallons of crude. 26% of the metal has eroded. The length of the line is covered in cracks and dents. Our lakes are at risk. The pipeline was slated to last 50 years. Times up.

Line 5 is a 68-year-old pipeline that carries crude oil and natural gas liquids through the Straits of Mackinac. Enbridge wants to replace it with a tunnel along the route.
White House Deputy Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre said Nov. 8 that the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is preparing “an environmental impact statement on Line 5 and the construction of that replacement line,” which she said “will help inform any additional action or position the U.S. will be taking on the replacement of Line 5.”

I just learned that the oil that comes from Canada comes form oil sands, and the method of extracting the oil is highly polluting and a major contributor to greenhouse gases. so people will have to find an alternative energy source. he's not dooming them to freezing to death. he is trying to save the planet.

@TheOneyouwerewarnedabout I’m a fan of railroads. Always have been. But whether you do it by rail or tanker trucks, the potential for accidents is always there. That said, a tanker truck carries a limited amount. A multi car train carrying tanker cars with oil presents a far greater hazard in an accident.
But before that happens, I believe there is the matter of negotiating with the Canadians before any action by the administration on this pipeline can be taken.

The Biden Administration has announced that it is not, for now, supporting the closure of the Line 5 pipeline, which carries Canadian oil and gas across the border into Michigan.
Prediction: the admin will say it’s too expensive to shut down the pipeline, and will push for a refurbishment/reroute. They already approved one Enbridge pipeline this year already, not that Keystone XL spazzers even noticed.
Also, most of what it carries goes from Western Canada to Eastern Canada, so no need to present it as some sort of critical supplier of oil and gas for our domestic market. It doesn’t supply Michigan - it supplies Canada through Michigan.
Living close to the source of the oil and natural gas in that line the take is a little bit different. The line also carries oil and gas on to Sarnia Ontario which has a large oil refinery supplying gasoline and jet fuel etc. The funny part from our perspective is that the part of Canada that most hates Alberta oil and gas is about to feel the loss of the feed stock from Alberta.

@cherokeepatti My great grand parents and their 5 children moved to Alberta in the late fall of 1904. They spent the winter living in a tent. My grandmother (a teenager at the time) remembers waking up in the morning with the outside temperature 45 below F. They were tough back then. Not sure why they left Oklahoma or why they stayed after that cold introduction but stay they did.

WASHINGTON, Nov 9 (Reuters) - The White House said on Tuesday it is not contemplating shutting down Enbridge Inc's (ENB.TO) Line 5 pipeline after Canada last month invoked a 1977 treaty with the United States to trigger bilateral negotiations over it.
Line 5 is at the center of a long-running environmental dispute between Calgary, Alberta-based Enbridge and the state of Michigan that has embroiled the Canadian and U.S. governments.
"We expect that both the U.S. and Canada will engage constructively in those negotiations," White House spokesperson Karine Jean-Pierre told reporters.

@soar2newhighs Yes, we’d like those folks to bring worldwide oil prices down a little. They’re big exporters, so we go to them whenever things are a little wonky. In 2017 Trump asked them to pump more because prices were too high. In 2020 Trump asked them to pump less because prices were too low. This year Biden asked them to pump more again. The usual diplomacy in this arena.
We have our own interests, of course, being a major producer ourselves, albeit with high extraction costs. Prices too high hurts our overall economy - prices too low wrecks our oil industry. It’s a delicate dance.
