No Respect: US Athlete Raven Saunders Risks Losing Medal After Flaunting Olympic Rules with Her Political Protest at Medal Ceremony

(From L) Second-placed USA’s Raven Saunders gestures next to first-placed China’s Gong Lijiao, and third-placed Australia’s Liam Adams after comepeting the women’s shot put event during the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games at the Olympic Stadium in Tokyo on August 1, 2021. (Photo by Ina FASSBENDER)

Saunders said afterwards that the “X gesture” represented “the intersection where all oppressed people meet.” She’s a victim.

She now risks losing a medal. What we do know is that if this is allowed we will now have to endure years of woke athletes parading on the medals stand.
Another institution destroyed by the left.

It looks like bad sportsmanship the gold medal winner deserves her moment of honor
@2ndtimeguy If they didn't want the silver and bronze medal winners to have a moment of honor they wouldn't have put them on the stand.

@MarmeeMarch A new sport????

It's the shot put, one of the four foundational track and field throwing events in the Olympic Games. It's been in the Olympics for almost 150 years🤦‍♂️
kodiac · 22-25, M
Sports and politics should be separate. Disrespect your country lose the medal. She was there to represent her country not the division being pushed by the left. It is a privilege that should not be used to further a political agenda. She us absolutely not a victim ,the victims are in the inner city slums not being a pampered athlete.
Burnley123 · 41-45, M
@kodiac No but they earn relatively little and work hard to earn gold medals. None of that distracts from your NIMBY attitude to free speech.
Budwick · 70-79, M
@Burnley123 Disrespect for country NEVER happens in MY backyard.
Burnley123 · 41-45, M
@Budwick Its disrespecting your politics, which is fine.
carpediem · 61-69, M
It's too bad she even got that close to gold. I'm ashamed to have someone like that represent my country.
Budwick · 70-79, M
@carpediem Me too.
Aww, did the white old man feel threatened by someone making a stance about equal rights for people who aren't white old men? So threatened that her literally just standing there ruined the whole Olympics for you? Your fragility is hilarious, if it weren't so sad. 🤭🙁
@Budwick Human rights are not a political issue, so it wasn't used as a political forum. Human rights are an issue that affect every aspect of life, including sports.
Hikingguy · 56-60, M
This is the olympics not a forum for politics. She is there representing our country. Pretty fucking selfish of her.@NerdyPotato
@Hikingguy You're offended by her suggestion that your country values equal human rights? Why? Doesn't that represent your ideals or something?
spjennifer · 61-69, T
You make the usual Right Winger's mistake of confusing politics with human rights. The Right are always the first to stand up for "Free Speech", as long as it's exercised by them, when someone else does it, then it becomes unacceptable to you. The medal presentation has little to do with the actual victory aside from providing visual proof that they won to spectators, is this really any different than an athlete who wraps themselves in their Country's flag on the podium?
Burnley123 · 41-45, M
@Budwick And as a 'free-speech absolutist' (🤣) you should be upset that anyone wants to cancel her because of an opinion they don't like. Some people are snowflakes who just want a safe space unchallenged by opinions which they find upsetting. This is bad, right?
Budwick · 70-79, M
@spjennifer Those that insist on representing their country negatively, do not deserve a giant, public, non-political stage like the Olympics. Olympic athletes are there there for their exceptional athleticism.
Their politics have no place there.
spjennifer · 61-69, T
@Budwick

How did she "Represent her country negatively"? Because she chose to make a statement that you don't like or agree with??? Olympic athletes have made many so-called political statements, you're the one who's making it political when it's more about human rights than about politics...

How about the USA choosing to boycott the 1980 Olympics in Russia? wasn't that a "Political statement"?
The IOC needs to get its participants out of politics and social issues.
They need to lay down some IOC rules and mandates and advise the athletes that if their actions violate those rules, they will be disqualified and sent home.
CookieLuvsBunny · 31-35, F
She got a degree from Ole Miss on a full athletic scholarship and, according to Forbes, her net worth is about $1M. Poor, oppressed thing
nedkelly · 61-69, M
@CookieLuvsBunny I hope it was NOT WHITE MANS MONEY
kodiac · 22-25, M
No one will remember her for her achievements only her disrespect. Besides no one remembers second place just the first loser.
@Budwick You wrote:

Being oppressed is not a human rights violation? Please! You can't be this ignorant.
Budwick · 70-79, M
@NerdyPotato Even though white people are the ones currently being oppressed, the Olympics is not the time or place. You seem to have a hard time understanding this point.
@Budwick Okay, you must be trolling because nobody can be this thick. I'll leave you to it because there is no point in discussing your fantasy world.
4meAndyou · F
We need to find out about their previous record of "wokeness" and race hatred prior to the Olympics, I think.

Why?

NOT to prevent her from participating in the Olympics, and NOT to violate her civil rights...(because that's what the commie leftists do), but to find out if she was in any way an activist and is in any way sincere...

OR is she just hogging attention at the Olympics hoping to cash in with BIG leftie corporations afterward? Like what's her name...the other a-hole. Can't remember her name.

When I discover the names of the corporations who have picked up on these cash whores, I will surely boycott them.
Ryannnnnn · 31-35, M
She still won the medal lol. Are people seriously that triggered by a little arm gesture?.
spjennifer · 61-69, T
@Ryannnnnn Apparently so! Rah, Rah, Rah, sis boom bah, 'Murica fuck yeah! Gawd forbid someone should exercise their Free Speech and have a dissenting opinion to the "Real Patriots" 🙃
kodiac · 22-25, M
Its a racist symbol just like the confederate flag.
BabyLonia · F
@kodiac the oppressors?

Anyone that does not believe that a minority group should be treated equally.

@CookieLuvsBunny the fact that Saunders has managed to make money from her hard work does not mean she did not come from a poor background. And just because she now has some privilege it does not mean she forgets where she came from.

And although homelessness is unrelated, since you bring it up how many of them are struggling with the issues that Saunders is trying to support? Did you know the percentage of homeless people that are black is 39%, whereby they only are up 13% of the population?
The number of homeless that belong to the LGBTQ community are also disproportionate to the population. I am sure you already understand this though since you have so much compassion for those that are homeless
room101 · 51-55, M
@kodiac

"Its a racist symbol just like the confederate flag."

No, it's not. Her arms form a cross. Which somewhat resembles the cross on the confederate flag. That's the only similarity.

The cross that she is displaying represents the intersection, the meeting point, the unification of people regardless of race, creed, gender, sexual orientation, political affiliation and any other divisive factor that you care to add to the list.

WHICH MAKES IT THE COMPLETE OPPOSITE OF WHAT THE CONFEDERATE FLAG REPRESENTS.
CookieLuvsBunny · 31-35, F
@BabyLonia
And although homelessness is unrelated,
Homelessness is not unrelated at all. Homeless people are extremely oppressed

. I am sure you already understand this though since you have so much compassion for those that are homeless

You have absolutely no idea who I am or what background I come from. I come from a very poor background and have experienced being homeless, not having proper or enough clothing, not knowing where my next meal was coming from, and living in dangerous and substandard situations.
I know what it is to be invalidated and looked down upon. I've stood in a line outside a mission, in the cold, and had the staff there treat me like garbage; I have stolen food and clothes. I've had body lice and no clean clothes to change into or access to a shower.
I don't need any lecture from you about statistics on poverty or on any other subject for that matter. Your sexuality or race doesn't matter when you are suffering.
Making some silly gesture at the Olympics does absolutely nothing for oppressed people or for anyone but herself.

I'm ok with that. The Olympics is not the proper avenue to voice you political grievances. All it does is steal the spotlight from the athletes who, through dedication and hard work, have earned their moment of glory. I have no problem with people demonstrating for their beliefs, but they need to do it on their own time.
I imagine those who are ok with these displays would feel different if it was white supremacists or nazis making these gestures. That's why it should just be banned straight across the board.
pattycakechamp · 26-30, F
Kinda glad I didn't bother with the Olympics. Though I notice it's mostly the privileged US team pulling this. Hell, if you want to protest, fine, but do it where you won't seem like someone disconnected from reality.

Also, Taiwan is a country, F china.
akindheart · 61-69, F
i didn't watch not one Olympic event because the athletes are ungrateful for the US.
4meAndyou · F
@akindheart Tamyra Mensah-Stock renewed our faith in ALL Americans when she declared that she was Proud to be an American, while draped in the US flag.
OnlyRhonda · 36-40, F
Excellent to think that athlete is protesting on behalf of the people of Tibet, and the Moslem minorities in China, the white minority in Zimbabwe, the Jews in the Middle East, the Christians in the Middle East, the Nigerians in South Africa, the Catholics in Ulster and the Gaelic speaking people in Scotland, and all the rest. Good for an American, with all the privileges of that great nation, and the privileges she has undoubtedly had to obtain her medal, thinks of people less well off than Americans.
FreestyleArt · 36-40, M
Is that the green hair that was Twerking before the race started?
novaguy2u · 70-79, M
Maybe Valerie Adams (from New Zealand) had her brother from Australia stand in for her at the medal ceremony?
MarineBob · 56-60, M
USOC must be totally overhauled
Hikingguy · 56-60, M
This country of ours is just a joke anymore. Fuck those who go to the olympics and do this shit. No other country on the planet does this stupid shit and is proud of who they represent.
akindheart · 61-69, F
@Hikingguy that be the truth!! I am doing great...how are you my friend?
Hikingguy · 56-60, M
I am great. Haven’t talked to you in a bit. Glad to see you still around.@akindheart
akindheart · 61-69, F

Just another DUMB ARSE Fool -

The Olympic Committee should remove her name from the record books

DISGRACEFUL TRASH

i'm more offended that some idiot has used part of my name.

The Olympics has rules and those rules should be followed. It's not a political debating platform. What if the other side chooses to make a Statement that you don't like?
