It's a success story AND still evolving, sure there have been problems and issues on which it has fallen short but overall it has been an example of how different nations can thrive when working together.

https://europa.eu/european-union/about-eu/eu-in-brief_en#:~:text=The%20EU%20has%20delivered%20more,currency%20and%20enjoy%20its%20benefits.

But I'm interested on what makes you suggest it could be a failure
Driver2 · M
@EuphoricTurtle well like I said that’s not what we hear
EuphoricTurtle · 41-45, M
@Driver2 In that case I would take this chance to reassess your news sources. I'm European and I've lived in two other EU nations.
Driver2 · M
@EuphoricTurtle that’s why I asked , the news has too many ‘experts’

BlueVeins · 22-25
Eh, it's a mix. I think the biggest problem with it is the whole common currency thing except with limited economic integration. If the EU wants to flourish, it needs to facilitate the flow of resources into less developed countries internally, sort of like the US does with its states. And honestly, I don't think it's prepared to do that. Still, I'm interested in seeing PESCO play out.
Driver2 · M
@BlueVeins i must say I’m learning more here than the stupid news 😃
It's a work in progress but it would be much better with 70 million Brits.
Uachtarain · 31-35, M
@quitwhendone They won't. I live in the UK, despite being Irish, and I know that the UK is out for good. The reason? One of the stipulations to (re)joining the EU is adopting the Euro as currency. The Brits used their opt-out last time. They won't get it again this time.

They will NEVER give up the pound.
Sharon · F
@Uachtarain The UK had lots of concessions and exemptions, it won't get any of those again either.
@Uachtarain I am for one world human currency.
I think the UK might be a failure...if this is what gives Scotland the impetus to become independent, the Continental financial businesses flee the country they had moved to over the past decade or so, etc.

?
@Frank52
It has, like the UK, a worrying rise in ultra nationalists, but they seem to be in check.
The Germans are more aware of the dangers so are better able to keep it in check.
Frank52 · 70-79, M
@NortiusMaximus You're right. I think they're more aware because of their history.
@Frank52 Definitely.
TheConstantGardener · 56-60, M
There are many countries who want to become members so that demonstrates a certain level of success.
QuixoticSoul · 41-45, M
EU is fine. When was the last time you visited?
Driver2 · M
@QuixoticSoul never , that’s why I asked I have no idea . I don’t like it when people who don’t live in the US think they know so much about it. I wanted to know so I asked people who do😎
QuixoticSoul · 41-45, M
@Driver2 Book yourself a trip once this shit settles down. It'll be good for you to broad your horizons, see all the ways europeans have it figured out better - and a few that they don't.

My family EU base is in Czechia, but that country is a bit rustic outside of Prague. Italy is great for a first time visit. Croatia makes for a great summer beach getaway. Switzerland if you have a bit of extra money and want to become permanently depressed about the state of your home country (not EU, but Shengen).
Driver2 · M
@QuixoticSoul you may be right , I do want to travel there.
I’m not depressed . But it’s better to see other places and Europe must be nice
1954zebedee · 70-79, M
It's a confirmed failure. Where they went wrong was aiming for a United States of Europe with a single currency. Will never work. Had they stuck to the common market principle all would have been good. Unfortunately the German mentality won through and they're now trying to take over Europe for the third time in just over a hundred years. The UK leaving is just the beginning of the process of dismantling the current system. I think Italy may well be next.
Driver2 · M
@1954zebedee than you know more about than most of us here .I don’t know but I don’t see European countries ,after all these years simply melting together. Forming an alliance of some kind maybe but that’s it
1954zebedee · 70-79, M
@Driver2 that's how it all started. A common trading area. Excellent idea. Then they got ambitious and blew it!
Driver2 · M
@1954zebedee oh , that makes sense . Can’t they just go back to free trade amongst Europe?
helenS · 36-40, F
The EU is a very dynamic project; it's still evolving, it may never be "finished". It was never intended to be just a common market place, that's just a means to an end. The objective has been, from the very start, to gradually create a European Republic, as a peace project, not as a result of war. There's a load of compromising on the way, there are drawbacks which are driven by nationalism, but I think Europe's future is great.
Long live the Free Republic of Europe! ❤️🇪🇺❤️
I can't possibly talk about the EU. I'm still grieving.
Driver2 · M
@JosephineTheFox grieving what ?
@Driver2 The loss of the EU.
Driver2 · M
@JosephineTheFox I’m sure 😃
Today is my last day in the Union. I did not vote to leave. Maybe I should have gone to live within its welcoming arms. But come what may, I live in the outermost reaches of Europe looking out across the Atlantic. Like most people I just hope I shall still be able to buy oranges for breakfast and make a salad for my packed lunch and something to cook for supper.
NoSugar · 22-25, F
its a success story like no other union of countries ever before
1954zebedee · 70-79, M
@NoSugar only the remoaners are regretting leaving the EU. There was a vote. The majority voted to leave. Get over it!!
NoSugar · 22-25, F
@1954zebedee well... try a new vote now if you so confident.

anyway i am perfectly fine with the uk dooming itself because they were stupid enough to fall for all the lies.

so long suckers and have fun with the IRA
1954zebedee · 70-79, M
@NoSugar typical remoaners response. The result wasn't what I wanted let's have another vote!! You lost. Get over it!
Cierzo · M
It is a failure. Too big, bureocratic and multicultural. The idea of a free trade zone was positive, though, but letting the UK in and implementing common policies were terrible ideas.
Mugin16 · 46-50, M
@Cierzo I know what you mean but please note that the EU and its predecessors were never a free trade zone. They were always a customs union. That is an important difference. Secondly the goal was to unite the Euroepean nation-state in a political union and reduce them to the status U.S. states have. That was the goal from the beginning. Jean Monet told the members of the first assembly of the Community that they were taking part in the first government of Europe.
Cierzo · M
@Mugin16 You are right, customs union, my mistake.
@Cierzo
but letting the UK in
I think that was possibly the EU's biggest mistake. The UK has never been a team player.
It is shaping up just as it was intended.. might be a little more tweaking...
I was born in the European Union and have a European Union passport. Will that count on 1st January 2021?
Carazaa · F
If they aren't honoring Jesus they will not prosper but their enemies will enslave them!
Driver2 · M
@Sharon typical leftist
Carazaa · F
@Sharon God is ruling every nation. "The nation who loves the Lord, will be blessed" This is Gods promise
@Carazaa
God is ruling every nation.
That's just your opinion, not everyone shares it. I agree with @Sharon, members of other religions can make the same claim about their gods. FYI, some of the most prosperous countries in the World aren't christian.

To return to the topic of this thread, the EU is doing very well.
But they will fail in the end! Bank on it.
assemblingaknob · 31-35, F
I'm curious too
FeetAreFantastic · 41-45, M
So far I think its a failure as a political union. But if it develops like Brussels wants and becomes subject to a single ruling authority it may well become a modern empire.
Driver2 · M
@FeetAreFantastic great them maybe it can have a great military and finance it 😃
