It is a failure. Too big, bureocratic and multicultural. The idea of a free trade zone was positive, though, but letting the UK in and implementing common policies were terrible ideas.

@Cierzo I know what you mean but please note that the EU and its predecessors were never a free trade zone. They were always a customs union. That is an important difference. Secondly the goal was to unite the Euroepean nation-state in a political union and reduce them to the status U.S. states have. That was the goal from the beginning. Jean Monet told the members of the first assembly of the Community that they were taking part in the first government of Europe.

I think that was possibly the EU's biggest mistake. The UK has never been a team player.
