The EU is a very dynamic project; it's still evolving, it may never be "finished". It was never intended to be just a common market place, that's just a means to an end. The objective has been, from the very start, to gradually create a European Republic, as a peace project, not as a result of war. There's a load of compromising on the way, there are drawbacks which are driven by nationalism, but I think Europe's future is great.
