Is the European Union a failure or still evolving?

@quitwhendone The UK has been a thorn in the EU's side ever since it joined. Charles de Gaulle (President of France) vetoed the UK's applications to join in 1963 and 1967. He knew the UK was going to be trouble.

@quitwhendone Maybe,. Just as the UK wanted to call all the shots when it did join and is still trying to now. The reason the Brexit talks are getting nowhere is because the Brexiters want all the benefits of EU membership without the concomitant costs and responsibilities.

Some to be sure, but many are not. I think characterising a whole nation in that way is as bad as saying that American citizens are all gun loving, ill educated, Trump supporters. Some yes...many more not.

@Frank52 I think @quitwhendone's comment is fair when applied to the UK (English) government but not all the people are like that. I'm English. ;)

@Sharon We certainly have a PM with more jingoistic bluster than competence, so no wonder folk from other countries think we're all itching to reclaim the colonies.

@quitwhendone They won't. I live in the UK, despite being Irish, and I know that the UK is out for good. The reason? One of the stipulations to (re)joining the EU is adopting the Euro as currency. The Brits used their opt-out last time. They won't get it again this time.

They will NEVER give up the pound.

@Uachtarain The UK had lots of concessions and exemptions, it won't get any of those again either.
