Spreader is not mentioned in the comments, that is until you added it.

But, back to the variants. It's called science, and this is how viruses work. when they jump from one host to the next, they modify their genetic code, to insure that they can continue to confuse the hosts' immune system.

So, while the majority of people will survive it, the price of getting infected, is helping the virus mutate. The only way this mutation will stop, is if the virus does not get a chance to infect. Herd immunity is probably achieved when the virus is not capable of infecting more than 70% of the population, as in its odds of finding someone who is not immunized become negligible.

@Piper I've lived much of my life thinking the best of people in general. I reckon I just never looked close enough. I knew, of course, there were folks out there that we callous, greedy and self absorbed. I just never thought there could be so very many.

@Carla I do still think more people than not, are not especially "bad". Like you though, I've learned there are more of those who are shockingly callous and self-absorbed than I'd thought. People that I've known personally, not just attitudes displayed towards this current pandemic.
