Why are these top countries happier than the USA?

Finland
Norway
Denmark
Sweden
Iceland
Switzerland
Netherlands
New Zealand
Canada
Austria
-The immigrants and citizens of these countries were rated on GDP, social support, health, life expectancy, freedom to do what you want and life choices, generosity, perception of corruption, crime, etc! Here is my hometown

Because the democrat party does not exist there
QuixoticSoul · 41-45, M
@jackjjackson Wrong.
ninalanyon · 61-69, T
@Carazaa Come on! Giving Obama the Peace Prize was controversial here and you won't have to ask many people to discover that not everyone is fond of him. Of course Obama is much more highly regarded than Trump here but please remember that people in Norway come in all sort of political types and have a wider range of opinions about the world than the media (both right and left leaning media) would have you believe.
Carazaa · F
@ninalanyon
I am only comparing to the violence and poverty and unhappiness in the USA!
QuixoticSoul · 41-45, M
Less inequality, less poverty, and less stress. In some of those counties - higher standard of living altogether.
Carazaa · F
@QuixoticSoul
Yes the standard for the average joe is higher in those countries! But more than the income people are slave to their work in the USA because employers give workers no vacations just sick leave! Those countries have 2 weeks paid at Christmas, and 5 weeks in the summer!

They are mostly social democracies.
Carazaa · F
@Northwest So let me explain! If someone says they are poor foreinstance, you need to ask them what that means, because it can mean something different than what Webster’s dictionary says!
Northwest · M
@Carazaa Absolutely, rrright.
Carazaa · F
@Northwest 👍️
Budwick · 70-79, M
They're no happier than me!
And, I'm an American, living in the heartland of the country.

I'm glad those people are happy.
You can adjust your stats Carazza - put me down as a Happy American!
Kwek00 · 41-45, M
@Budwick Because ever since the 80s the Republican party hasn't really been in favour of big governement with aid for individuals. Everyone just has to work, and if you are not making it, it's your own fault. That's what Milton Friedman, Hayeck and Rand popularised. That's also why the "libertarians" (which originally aren't conservatives) are voting republican.

I seriously wonder how libertarians feel today... like, if you are still happy with todays direction of the Republican party, there has to be some serious mental gymnastics going on.
Carazaa · F
@Budwick
I believe the USA give to many countries especially if it helps them but nevertheless it’s good to give! And the USA is a light on a hill but they can improve in human rights! And be less racist! I think the president can show more love!
There are many things that are great in the USA like education is great
Even if the scores are lower on the average it is great education and not rote like in Europe where they don’t care much if it’s fun as long as you learn what’s in the book! But if we want an educated country we need higher education to be free or cheaper like in those on that list! And medical care is too expensive too for the average person, with high deductibles of $5000-10,000
Carazaa · F
@Budwick I hope that is true!
Roadsterrider · 56-60, M
I have been to a few of those listed, I wouldn't give up what I have here for a place there. The company I work for just hired an engineer from Norway, I asked him why he would want to come to the US to work. He said that because of social programs and taxes, he could do better for himself in the US. I am pretty content with my life and the direction it is going. I think it would have been harder in some countries and easier in others. On the happiness scale, the US ranked 19th out of 195 countries, that is still in the top 10%. And I have more freedoms than most other countries provide.
QuixoticSoul · 41-45, M
@Roadsterrider You're wrong because you're lacking context. Every party has a spectrum.

Moderate republicans tend to support abortion rights (as do basically all sane people the world over), lgbt rights, and some gun control measures. Does this make them left of the left?

Left of the dem wing wants unrestricted immigration, single-payer health care, policies like green new deal, etc. Is Pelosi left of them?

Basically nobody in congress is against freedom of worship.

Tearing up the SOTU address has nothing to do with policy positions in the first place, that was a ridiculous example to use.
Roadsterrider · 56-60, M
@QuixoticSoul Yes, every party has a spectrum, as a moderate conservative, if a woman wants to have an abortion it is up to her to decide. I don't think federal funding should be used to patch up a lack of responsibility though.

Yes, Pelosi is always to the extreme left when it come to policy regarding immigration, abortion, green projects. She has shown that she will only support extreme left ideology by her record, by her speech, and by her actions like ripping up the address to make a statement.

Yes, freedom of worship is being attacked, to say it isn't is being intentionally obtuse to the facts. When a woman can be fired for wearing a crucifix to work, when a church can be dragged into the courts because they have a nativity scene in front of the church, when children are forced out into the schoolyard to be able to pray, religious freedom is being attacked.

Everyone has their own opinion, we differ in opinion and I can live with that.
QuixoticSoul · 41-45, M
@Roadsterrider
Yes, Pelosi is always to the extreme left when it come to policy regarding immigration, abortion, green projects.
This is, of course, not true.
cycleman · 61-69, M

greenmountaingal · 70-79, F
More income equality.
Carazaa · F
@ninalanyon not like the USA
ninalanyon · 61-69, T
@Carazaa That's true. I didn't mean to imply that, just to say that we still have work to do.
Carazaa · F
@ninalanyon I think
It is beautiful when a country is working on making it better for everyone!
JoeyFoxx · 51-55, M
None of those countries reject immigration
None of those countries are closely aligned with the Israli or Saudi governments
All of those countries have reasonable restrictions on possession of firearms
None of those countries jail people based on their ethnic background

Though, I'm sure the list is longer....
Carazaa · F
@Silverwings
The same politicians that say they don’t want to help the people because it means raising taxes are all making over $200,000 a year!! They can afford that?! when the average American makes about $50,000!???
The politicians can afford all the programs to help you have been lied to!
The taxes from all the millionaires estates are all 10,000 a month in taxes! Where is it going? I tell you, to their own salaries and military bombs! It’s sick!
The governmental salaries in the top 10 countries is the SAME or lower than the average in the top 10 countries!
Abstraction · 61-69, M
@Silverwings In Australia we do pay a little more tax than you do in the USA. But I pay about $1200/year for full private health cover. I think my cousin in the USA pays that per month. Overall, we're higher on the human development index than the USA, so we're doing ok. We're not socialist. If you can't afford private in Australia - maybe a single mum with 2 kids and no job right now - they can get treatment for nothing. Doctor, hospitals. The waiting lists are not long - despite what Fox News in the USA keeps saying (to support their advertisers who make profits from people's health.) The American health system is very good, but not everyone can access it - it's the most expensive in the world. In terms of public health, many people are not being cared for. No child deserves inferior health care.

How do you pay for this stuff? Think about the mega-wealthy corporations and individuals in the USA who don't pay tax. The problem is the hard-working middle class people are carrying the country.
Carazaa · F
@Abstraction thank you!!
Crazywaterspring · 61-69, M
They don't have Republicans.
Carazaa · F
@Crazywaterspring
Sadly there are some Nazis growing in Scandinavia now because they have listened to some republican tweets!
SumKindaMunster · 51-55, M
Smaller populations, less diverse populations, more political homogeny. It would be better to compare the US to larger, more populated countries like China and India.

How does the US compare to those two?
Silverwings · 61-69, F
@Carazaa Billions have already been spent on raising people out of poverty, yet multitudes still exist, equality made great strides during the time of Martin Luther King Jr, in the 60's and healthcare got better under Obama, what else do you suggest? How is it possible to take a poor person and enhance his wealth? I do not understand these idealistic countries that you are speaking of?
Carazaa · F
@Silverwings
We need free healthcare and free colleges like the top 10 countries! Longer vacations, 5 weeks like the other countries! No shelters for the drug addicts and mentally ill, but apartments like the top 10 countries! No lobbying allowing for paying politicians off! Mass transits everywhere so there is no discrimination against the blind, the handicapped, the poor! Continue affirmative action, no firing allowed like the top 10 countries that have laws to help people instead of firing them! Planned communities where the homes are walking distance to all necessary businesses so they aren’t car dependent!
SumKindaMunster · 51-55, M
@LeopoldBloom Maybe if you are using those 3 examples exclusively. 🤷‍♂️
AthrillatheHunt · 51-55, M
None of those countries are “countries of immigrants” until very recently, with the exception of Canada.
Sweden used to have the highest test scores on education in the world. Not anymore.
AthrillatheHunt · 51-55, M
To complain would be to admit poor decision making, and most people would rather suffer in silence than admit that.
What did your relatives there say about their pensions being slashed to pay for immigrant benefits?
Wasn’t it the immigrants who were supposed to pay their pensions?
That’s what Swedes were told by the Swedish Government. Lol.@Carazaa
Carazaa · F
@AthrillatheHunt No the USA has much more crime!
they are saying that we need to educate in Swedish values and do better! It is not like the USA where the crime is all over and people are scared and there are homeless in the park and drug addicts who are robbing stores and mass shootings in schools and no one is doing anything about it except blaming blaming! Did I send you the video of my hometown in Sweden? I will!
AthrillatheHunt · 51-55, M
I’m sure your hometown is beautiful. We certainly have our fair share of problems here too based on bad decision making.@Carazaa
What do you mean TOP countries - TOP of what ? Cheesemakers ? Watches ? cause that about all.

Roadsterrider · 56-60, M
@QuixoticSoul If it is subjective, and I agree that it is, then the list is worthless. My question was how did they come up with the rating and what questions were asked, not defiance of the results. Why would anyone be so touchy about asking for info regarding the polls? I think we should all ask more questions of information that is posted on line instead of walking in lock step around an agenda.

Basic needs, food, shelter and medical care, not shelters. Public housing isn't a shelter, it is an apartment or house that the government in the US does pay for.

I am not going anywhere with it, I just gave a simple opinion and asked a simple question, you are the one who keeps responding with questions because we have differing opinions. I don't have an argument here, just a curiosity about the results.
Roadsterrider · 56-60, M
@Kwek00 Yes, those questions. Thanks.
[c=#359E00]more than that. More countries are happier than america. America is overrated, they are nothing more than sad and depressed people flock together, home for mental illness[/c]
Carazaa · F
@YukikoAmagi
There are a lot of positives here but people need to care more about people! I can’t believe all the heartless people!
PowerofStories · 61-69, M
I think the question is well worth examining. However, I think you will be disappointed if you expect a civil discussion of this topic on this site.
SW-User
USA seems to refuse to recognize where their government is failing. I simply don’t understand. They could have better but they choose to have nothing if it means being selfish. You know that mentality....

“I don’t pay taxes so that person can be treated with my money”

Yet their health system is more expensive than a nordic health system... go figure.

Maybe they can’t understand that person could be them or their family.
Carazaa · F
@SW-User I think you are right this is part of the problem blaming the poor and not realizing it could be them!
Because they are homogeneous
SO IMMIGRANTS NEED NOT APPLY they do a good job keeping their nations white.

japan. Sweden. most counties in south America and some parts of Russia because they don't have to deal with Politics much
msros · F
Scandinavia seems to always be the happiest of the lot.
Carazaa · F
@msros The emphasis is more on living and family vacations and less on work! And kids are not infront of the tv because parents are working in the summer which is so so shocking to me that most Americans don’t have ANY vacation days just sick leave! This is hurting kids and families and making people more stressed, on drugs, and mentally ill in general in the USA I think!
Carazaa · F
@msros you know I think
Longer paid vacations is a big part everyone has 5 weeks in the summer and a few weeks in the winter! NOT part of sick days!
curiosi · 61-69, F
Who's to say they are?
Carazaa · F
@Nayla
I have noticed a considerable racist attitude living here it is so sad the discrimination in the USA but there are many sweet people too! But their attitude is more you’re on your own, very little social support! The homelessness is terrible and hopefully something good will come about all the riots! I am praying!
Abstraction · 61-69, M
@Carazaa There is also the Human Development Index, which systematically looks at key indicators for quality of life for the entire country. (This is a much better indicator than GDP, because when the mega-wealthy corporations and individuals don't pay much tax it makes it look like the country is doing well, but it's just an average. Many people might be in extreme poverty.)

http://hdr.undp.org/en/content/2019-human-development-index-ranking
USA is at #15. Most of the countries above them are social democracies, which has NOTHING to do with socialism, and a lot to do with more equal opportunities and support where needed.
Carazaa · F
@Abstraction yes I agree!
Silverwings · 61-69, F
USA is # 15 and China is #19, so they are oblivious to Christians, because China is trying to destroy anyone Christian. https://www.usnews.com/news/best-countries/quality-of-life-rankings

Carazaa · F
Yes many countries are on the list but I was just focusing on the top 10 and how similar they are and what they have in common that makes the citizens so happy even their immigrants!! Since there are unhappy Soto end in the USA evident from the recent murdered and all the demonstrators I thnk we need to strive for better! Stronger domination won’t do it but love will! Those countries have loving government and loving police! @Silverwings

@Silverwings What is the American dream about? It is all about owning a house! The government here actually encourage materialism! A house that the banks took from people? things like that shouldn’t happen! In Scandinavia the goal is not a house but more vacation with kids, less stress, less poverty more equality! The government aren’t encouraging buying! They encourage saving and reusing old, and enjoying life with family!

I listened to the king of Sweden’s speech to the people and it was so encouraging and hopeful! He did not talk about vaccines or a cure! He talked about love and hope and faith in God! He gave personal stories to the young to give them perspective!
Each king in Sweden has had a motto for Sweden! The first king of Swedens motto for the people in 1400 was The Lord is our God! The leaders are very loving in these 10 countries.
ninalanyon · 61-69, T
@Carazaa
In Scandinavia the goal is not a house
Sweden is not the whole of Scandinavia you know. Here in Norway owning a house is quite definitely a goal for the vast majority of people and working on that house is one of the commonest hobbies.
Carazaa · F
@ninalanyon I’m talking about the values of the countries American dream is just a house! The governments in Scandinavia concentrate on the happiness which is equality, no discrimination, economic welfare, vacation time, etc! All my friends and my relatives have 2 houses one for summer vacations. But that’s not the focus like it is in the “American dream” to have a house! Many Scandinavians are happy to live in apartments!
