The crying should be on the part of the Senate, because it loses either way and is so myopic that the trees have blinded them before they every even considered a forest existed. This isn't about a presidency anymore - this is about history.
In toeing a party line by blocking willing first-hand witness testimony, in burying their heads by refusing to accept what they know to be relevant evidence, they have effectively buried their heads in the sand on a national stage. With so many Senators set to retire, their chance of hanging on to any power or ever being considered a respectable party and not a circle of abject, morally bankrupt cowards is impossible.
Anyone with three connected neurons know Trump is guilty. And we've understood all along he wouldn't be held accountable by his own cult followers. Problem is, the curtain's been pulled back and while his base is loud and crass, its also very small and shrinking every day. The Senate painted themselves into a corner by ensuring they lose this debacle either way.
It wasn't expected that the Senate Trump sycophants would conduct a fair trial. And they didn't. It will cost them the Senate this November, and ensures Trump will lose as well.
@sunsporter1649 If you rob a bank and give the money back, it doesn't prove your innocence. Trump withheld aid and in doing so committed a crime, according to the GAO. And even though the bulk of the testimony was successfully stonewalled by Trump in a flailing and desperate attempt to prevent the truth from coming out, a few brave souls did testify truthfully, and we know about the president's extortion of Ukraine. Republican Senators even admit it, but refuse to remove the king.
Why cry? This was as much a capitulation as anything 😂
"I don't need to hear any more evidence to decide that the president did what he's charged with doing," Alexander told NPR's Steve Inskeep on Friday. "So if you've got eight witnesses saying that you left the scene of an accident, you don't need nine."
@lou502008 No, they didn't. They were ready, the evidence is there and the argument was sound. And they dropped nothing. They ensured the GOP loses either way on this. It was the question of a quick but painful course reversal or a long, slow, embarrassing death. Guess which they chose?
Not even close. Here's what Senator Lamar Alexander, R-Tenn., said today:
I don't need to hear any more evidence to decide that the president did what he's charged with doing. So if you've got eight witnesses saying that you left the scene of an accident, you don't need nine....
I think it's appropriate for me as a United States senator to say, 'Mr. President, you shouldn't do that.' But that doesn't mean that I should take it upon myself to vote, to remove him from office and take him off the ballot. I think that's up to the people.
It's not a question of whether they believe he did not do it, it's that they're not willing to vote country ahead of party.
No surprise really everyone knew old Trump would dodge the bullet now the Democrats should give up on the trial crap and concentrate on finding a candidate with a chance to give Trump a run for the presidency
