Trump pulling troops out of the middle east. No matter your political affiliation, surely thats a positive move?

xixgun · M
Personally, I think we should pull our troops and our money, from any country that has citizenry shouting, "Death To America".
xixgun · M
@gol979 It's politically incorrect and my own, although I've heard it expressed by many others as well.
gol979 · 41-45, M
@xixgun go for it.....I may disagree but by stating that it's "politically incorrect" probably means you're struggling to think it's correct. But I making huge aspersions there
xixgun · M
@gol979 Sentiment will not be revealed. Thank you.

Common sense would say so but it's Trump. No matter what he does it will be criticized.
I don't think so, really, at least the way its being done, with the protest of the Secretary of Defense and with no signs of actual contemplation of the consequences for the U.S. and her allies.

Trump might well be making the right move, but I've never been convinced that he's smarter than the generals or that his gut level feelings are a substitute for an actual studied analysis of a situation with actual factual briefings by professionals who've made their careers out of this kind of thing. This doesn't even look like a scenario where he considered their advice and looked at things and then came to his own decision. It smells more like he just got petulant and said "f-ck it, I need to do something now, and this looks good."
@gol979 That's pretty cynical, at least for generals that move up to positions like Secretary of Defense. But the problem is still there when you don't accept input from career diplomats either.
gol979 · 41-45, M
@MistyCee it is cynical but based on evidence. Just look what happened when trumpkins even suggested that he may reduce military spending by a paltry (relatively) $30 billion (military budget is a disgusting $718 billion). The generals came out apoplectic, saying it would be a disaster for america. They got their way, not surprisingly, now the 2019 military budget is $750 billion. Pure insanity
@gol979 Sure, but the bias of folks in one department wanting more funding, or even wanting less funding for another department like the State Department is not a big deal really, and should just be seen as part of the normal process.

The problem here really seems to be that POTUS doesn't seem to respect that process, and find and keep people to work within it.

Saying he's a businessman misses the point. Some CEOs work with structured management, incorporate the advice of department heads, and delegate effectively.

As a retired military soldier ( 27 years of service and 10 major surgeries because of it ) that had to go and sit around the world including the middle east where we are hated because we try to install governments friendly to our Government. It just has not worked. I backed fighting ISIS in there back yard 100%, But there has to be a point where the people of the lands we are stationed in stand up and fight for themselves!

In the initial removal of the Talban in Afghanistan we did it with a few groups of special forces very successfully! The Afghan leaders and citizens welcomed and loved us, and warned us not to be become the invader and to maintain our liberator assistor role! Then We invaded the country because of these Washington D.C. advisors said we need to install an American friendly government. That is when we became the invaders we were warned not to become, and became hated further in the middle east and ruined our Afghanistan friendly assistor role.

Syria was a knee jerk reaction to the world's as well as the UN's so what are you going to say and do about this type situation. If Russia did not stand behind the Syrian dictator we would of invaded the country too, and gotten bogged down for countless years trying to install an a pro American Government there too. We are involved militarily in several small African countries now too trying the same dang thing.

When is there enough American blood and money spent to realize we can not make the world like us by force? !!! They have to stand up and fight for what they want their countries to be as it's own citizens; then we cantry and make friends from that point forward. If they want to fight train and arm them that is all~!

@WillaKissing that's a very honest description by a military man. I tip my cap to you sir. It's not the individuals I don't agree with (well most) it's the system and the history that goes with it
gol979 · 41-45, M
@WillaKissing I used the epithet sir but didn't realise you are transsexual......apologies if I caused any offence

No. While it can be argued that we never needed a presence in the Middle East, the fact is we're there now. We have guaranteed support to our allies and we have created a defense against those who would do harm.

In leaving suddenly, we create a vacuum. We've done this over and over in the world, and each time it has been a spectacular failure. In the space of that vacuum, the most powerful and ruthless forces will gain control. We will end up back over there fighting those forces, just as we have for decades.

well yes and no. Yes in the fact that the troops can come home and see familys, etc. but no in the fact that it might not actually be good depending in the situation. i dont watch the news alot becuase its always the same bull that the media wants to tell us. but iknow the US has done this oarticarular maneuever a few times and then the next president comes and office and sends troops back in.
hlpflwthat · M
If pulling half the troops from Afghanistan triples the danger to those remaining, I could not see that as a positive move.
hlpflwthat · M
@gol979 Not at all. Need I remind you we are talking about actual human beings who number nearly 15,000? I don't see anything wrong with devising a planned withdrawal - rather than blindsiding commanders with announcements meant to bolster public opinion.

I have soldiers in my life - and I love them. I'd be happy to see them all home permanently. I'd be happier still to never send them off on another fool's errand like Afghanistan or Iraq. I just want to see that happen orderly & safely. Our soldiers deserve that.
gol979 · 41-45, M
@hlpflwthat fair point and well made. Looks like I was being facetious 👍
hlpflwthat · M
@gol979 All good here - I think we're both on same side of this one, really.

I just don't think the president has a clue what announcements like this do to young hearts & families, especially this time of year. If you truly support our troops, you don't fuck with their hopes & dreams. Especially at Christmas.

I've watched this president insult a Gold Star family and trivialize the 5+ years John McCain and others spent as POWs. He has a history of gutless armchair-quarterbacking previous administrations for their decisions as CIC. I can think of no other president in my lifetime who has been so out of touch and unconcerned for members of our military - past or present.

Sometimes it's prudent to admit things didn't go your way and bail. Spinning it as a victory is a bit much though.
gol979 · 41-45, M
@QuixoticSoul for sure.....and the victory spin is just that, spin. Mind you, they didn't go.there to fight Isis, victory for them.would have been to insert a US friendly regime
